I'll keep an eye on it when I lower it. Actually there's been a delay in lowering it coz I hyperextended my knee during basketball so can't do much nowadays. Gotta take my car back next week to fix up the guard work as it still rubs sometimes, so might get the dudes to remove the perches for me.
So it did end up being the diff and not the haldex that was the problem?

Honestly not sure because it was all changed (rear diff, haldex and drive shaft). They sourced the part for $1250 from Adelaide.. I wasn't paying so I couldn't care less about the price =]

All the mechanics I spoke to previously told me it was the rear diff though, resulting from the haldex not being serviced at proper intervals. This is what confuses me as there's separate rear diff oil and haldex fluid right? Plus the tyre wear I had from this problem was on the front, leading me to believe it was the haldex. Then they tell me it's all one unit and "sorta" the same thing.

Honestly I just stopped thinking about it because it did my life in.

Haldex and diff are two completely autonomous units that just bolt to each other, like the gearbox bolts to the engine.

My guess is that it was the haldex that was stuffed but you got a new diff thrown in for free, can't complain about that.

Yep I realise they're two different things but 3 VW specialists all said it was the rear diff which is weird.

No complaints here! Seriously I LOVE how smooth it is now which makes it feel quicker as well.

          • Gear box looks like it has died............again
Only had it rebuilt recently after the bolts in the diff tried to jump out

Did that end up the total price? This is probably something I'll need done next year.

All up it was $1810. They charged 4 hours labour plus they had to replace the fluid and filter. Other quotes I got ranged from $2100-$2800.

I think if you keep driving with the problem it'll end up costing more in tyres and other parts wearing out quicker. It sucks but needs to be done. Just keep checking eBay for cheaper parts.

                            • Fantastic stuff; the introduction of the FT's will increase the demand for Mk 4 GTI's slowly and surely; with GTI's below $10k these days, spending a little extra on an FT, fuelling and tune and more power than a front driver will ever need! That said, with Audi S3's dropping well below the $15k mark there's still abit of stiff competition on in the sub -$15k hot hatch market.
