yup. the tie rod (the actual rod) attaches quit near the centre of the car (and pivots on a pretty large ball tbh), and then the rod extends out about 10inches or so ("thats what she said") and thats where you find the locking nut and your tie rod end. the number of turns your tie rod end is along the tie rod is one of the determinant factors for alignment, so remembering how many turns off you took with the old tie rod end will help you get very close to the original alignment - or good enough to drive to get one anyway.

oh, as a mechanic, i don't think we ever saw the need to undo the inner (we left that to power steering rebuilders). i am not sure if the VW is any different. but get it close, and drive to the nearest one. no harm

        • yeah, doing the stage 2 refresh calls for it anyway. 120k kms so may as well.

              • I put some coilovers in my car today. I'm proud for getting it all done by myself with some questionable tools. Now to just wait till they settle then adjust them to perfection.

mad respect dude. i say that cause i have been struggling to do mine, although mine is a full refresh plus shocks but still its not easy first time. if you were like me you did one side in the same time it took the Big Fella to make the Earth, and the second side was as quick as your first rumpity pump?

                  • Haha, I guess you're right, I did fronts then backs though. Backs are a lot less complicated (Fwd makes them easier) but did take only a fraction of the time. I couldn't get my hands on a 21mm deep offset spanner and so had to get some help with the lower strut top nut (thank you Jack at Gold Coast Vee Dub). I actually did something dumb and ended up unable to remove the drivers side strut. Mr angle grinder came to the rescue though .

I was originally thinking of replacing the bushes for the front LCAs with TT/32 versions, but I might do that at a later date. It seems like a pretty intensive job. I am at 100k though.

When will we see this boost happening with your Bora?

                          • Nah, I had a type of spring compressor that only allowed me to compress the springs to a certain point.

The problem was the driver side. The compressor I have needed to be placed onto the coils with the thread of the compressor pointing upwards into the inside of the strut tower and so when compressed and then tried to remove the strut I was unable to pull it up out of the spindle because of the thread of the compressor poking up into the tower.

I then for some reason thought it'd be great to undo the strut nuts and dissasemble the strut while it was still on the car which obviously resulted in the spring decompressing and giving me even less room to move. Then I just chopped the spring in half and pulled it all out. A classy ending to a frustrating problem .

                            • Fitted my Track density 034 doggy dogbone mount
Car is still on blocks with my slow-as-paint-drying suspension refresh, but i'm under lights tonight and hoping to sneak away and use a "undisclosed location's" hydro-press to get the bushings into the LCA.
Tie rod and tie rod ends done.
                              Ball joints done.
Springs compressed. Now just to get those bushings in and then i can fit the LCA.
With caffeine and luck i might finish the install incl rears by tonight.
