  • Today I cursed at my car.
On the way to work it started idling funny, then low on power, struggling, shaking like an old truck, sounded like a WRX.
    A coil pack failed !

I made it to my mechanic and took a $50 cab to work. This detour, added to the traffic issues today, meant close to a 3hr trip to work.

Hopefuly I can pick it up at lunch.

My prediction is the ignition amp that should be on the airbox, can't remember if you still have that fitted?

      • Ignition amp was my other thought. Coil pack tester showed coil 3 was down. From what I've read today number 3 is more than likely to go down when the amp is dying.
I'll call machanic back and ask him to swap the packs over to see. No point waiting for the new part to arrive and find it makes no difference then wait for an amp to be delivered.

News just in, it is the amp. I bet that cost more than a coil. It probably overheated as I was stationary in traffic for so long today.
It should be in the air box but I run aftermarket airbox so what options do I have ?

New one prolly last the life of the car but like you say, it's the heat. My advice is mount it on as big a piece of aluminium as you can sensibly fit in there. Use some heatsink paste to help the transfer. I have some that's perfect for the job in the garage. About 3-4mm thick. Let me know if you want some. We'll work out delivery....

I sold a secondhand one for $40 a few years back, then found out VW do them for $600!! WTF

          • It's clean up week in area, so an old pc will be going out. I wonder if a heat sink and a fan would help?
I should have some thermal paste around somewhere.

Anything to get heat out of the amp will be a bonus. You are welcome to some of this sheet I have.

                            • had a minor service done at a near by vw specialist.
next minute car is running like a bucket. dumping fuel, using excessive amounts of fuel, shaking on ideal, sluggish in lower revs.
oxygen sensor had died (only had it replaced 60,000km ish ago)
Big thanks to Chris at Volkwerke who went above and beyond what he had to do to get me on the road again!

Haven't been on hear for a while.
Finally had my front LCA bushes changed to some Fulcrum items.
Front camber issue now sorted and wheel alignment has been done - Awesome!

I find the KW coilovers a bit harsh for my driving style and I reckon I look like a honda integra on its bumpstops bouncing around.
*facepalm* Might end up ripping it all out and going back to standard...
