I am convinced you can get a beautiful finish in a booth, but I wanted to literally shoot on a driveway as proof the Plastidip is very forgiving.

What i've ended up with is a textured paint thats quite rough but i think it adds to the matte finish and helps to really break up my poor paint shoot. Sure, there are bits of fluff, dirt, and small bugs in the paint but its a genuine home job and I gave it a crack. tbh i am stoked with the result and maybe i could lay some ground sheets next time to keep the dirt at bay.
Im used to seeing backyard matte black jobs on Nissan Gazelle's and KE70 Corolla's, so either way I'm very impressed with the job you did compared to what I have seen. If you do use a booth and do the right painting steps you will of course have less **** in the paint.
I paint every day. some jobs have **** in them, some don't. I follow the right steps every day to reduce ****, but it can still happen.
I read that when BMW first painted the matte black M3's. The first car they painted was 16 times, only because you literally cannot polish **** out of paint on a matte colour. It has to be redone.

As you said with the ground sheets, if you don't do that. Hose the ground off with a lot of water, this will reduce the contaminants in the paint quite considerably. Also if you do it in a driveway put multiple tarps up on the walls but leave one side completely open. Get a pedestal fan and put it in the corner of the covered side so the the air flow goes from the covered side to the opening side. Its the ultimate home made booth.

          • Central locking on my golf has gone When locking from drivers side it only locks the drivers door. Think I'll leave it, reading up it seems like a real hassle to fix mkiv door locks and the passenger sides central locking works fine.

That box got mangled, I would be so worried if I saw that after waiting 38 days lol.

How much did all the lights set you back? If you don't mind me asking. Also I reckon you should do some sort of install thread.

                • Slowly installed new tie-rods, front lower control arm bushings and rear adjustable control arms over the last couple of weeks, with the help of some good mates. She's down getting a wheel alignment at the moment. Can't wait to get her back, will feel like a new car!

I think I fixed my passenger door on the weekend. Drivers door was ok but passenger side would only lock or unlock itself.
I have pulled out the lock before and checked all the solders etc but found nothing.

I started to believe that the problem was the micro switch that indicates the door is open or not.
When a door is open it will only lock/unlock itself.

After reading lots of threads I found people were getting new micro switches from radio shack and retrofitting them.
Someone else had solved their problem by simply cleaning the microswitch !

I did this - used about 1/2 a can of brake cleaner, it was running out the bottom of the door - Yes the car smells

Mine carked it as well. Managed to fix it using a mix between a new and old switch in the end as the new one was too big. Turned out to be the plunger ruined though.
