What have you done to your mk4 (golf/bora) today?

  • Replaced stock springs, front and rear. The lowered springs were too much for my driveway and I need to be able to tow with the Bora.

Put the factory wheel nuts and locks back in too. The ones on the car were extra long ones left over from some previous alloys.

Haven't played with MK4 suspension before, pretty neat the way it all goes together.

Before and after (hadn't been moved at this stage, it settled after driving)

      • Hi Pete,
Any pics of it with the bumber on? How well is it hidden?

Nothing handy but it's the same as this one that's in the for sale section.

With the tongue off it's pretty discreet. It just sits under the bumper.

          • Towed the MK1 out to a race meet in the pouring rain today. First time towing with the Bora.

It tows the trailer no problems, that v6 is an impressive thing.

Fuel consumption was as you'd expect, pretty woeful, not helped by having to load the golf backwards to get the ball weight right.

The 4motion got me back up my wet driveway no problems too. A mazda ute I used last time nearly didn't make it.

Trailer and ball weight is just within the towing capacity of the Bora although I think I might make a lighter trailer in the future.

I think thats a good idea. I hear we could be making 2 light weight trailers to tow Golfs

              • Thanks Pete. Looks good. Did the wiring give you any problems?

Nope. I couldn't find a plug in the loom for the trailer wiring so I piggy backed it off the tail lights.

The tail lights actually have lots of sockets on the back of them. only one of them is used to connect to the loom. You can pick up all the other connections straight off the back of the lights. I had a few MK3 looms out of wrecks that I pinched the connectors off.

I bought a trailer socket with a flat cable pre-terminated ( The kind that coils up inside to boot and passes out over the boot rubber when in use.) and fitted the MK3 connectors to the end of the cable then just plugged it in.

I'd still like to find the factory wiring details and activate the trailer lamp fail system that the manual talks about.

No issues electricaly, it just works. Did about 300km with the trailer on the weekend, no dramas.

                    • Ordered some of these. I'll save their cost back in not having to do rear tyre replacements within a year...

Yep I've got those. As awesome as 2.5 degrees of negative camber looks it does chew up the tyre insides pretty quick.
For your reference, installation on the bottom will give you plenty of adjustment (Vortex makes things quite ambiguous when it comes to installation on top or bottom).
                        Cheers,

Yeah, I've had a chat to a few people, glad to have what I've been told so far is correct.

I think I had -2.7º and -2.8º camber on the rears, and yeah, I'm keen to adjust that before it ruins my tyres. You're right about the looks though, the car certainly looks phat from behind at the moment!

                          • You just need to corner more often and harder to keep full-face tread contact, that way you won't wear the inside edges.

                            • Managed to get a stick stuck in my tyre somehow while driving. Too nervous to pull it out as i am sure it will go psssshhhhh and go flat. I only replaced another one 2 weeks ago. This is ridiculous!

                              • If it's punched through the tyre, the difference between pulling it out and leaving it there will just the the difference between a fast leak and a slow one.

If its in the tread, I'd be surprised if it's punched through though - failing a long nail (or a key, long story), not much gets through the tread!
