  • well the clearance tool ecs provided clears inside of bellhousing, some marks inside but from when gearbox was installed last. will put flywheel back on then install gearbox to see if it spins, then pressure plate. although the pressure plate was hard to come off at the bottom so maybe could possibly be that.

    • Couple of quick questions

Are you putting the bolt in to hold the throwout bearing in position during installation? (The one you take out again afterwards)

Is clutch friction plate installed correct way around?

The bolts stops the throwout bearing from tipping out of alignment during installation.

          Then you remove it afterwards.

            • I meant to say the arm that pushes the throwout bearing (#7)..it can tip out of position.

That would jam the assembly and stop the engine rotating.

                • Some instructions here about bolt #12

Volkswagen Workshop Manuals > Golf Mk4 > Power transmission > 5-speed manual gearbox 02J > Clutch, control > Servicing clutch release mechanism

Doesn't actually say exactly where it goes!

                            Looks the goods to me!
Might do the same thing some time this week. Did you do the door grab handles also or were they too badly cracked to attempt?

                              • I put some Mk7 style wheels and a different style of grill. I need to lower it a bit for the wheels to look right.
