The rear bumper under the abs plastic bumper is attached to the rear panel with 4 bolts. Simply bolts on flat to the rear panel. When removed it is noticed that it covers 2 square holes the the legs of the towbar slot into and bolt up through the body.
Neither are attached to the suspension in any way.
I imagine they would both offer a similar level of lateral support.
So that being said, one of the best things I did that sharpened the feeling of the steering and stiffen up the back a heap was to attach a whiteline rear anti sway bar - best bang for buck handling modification IMO.
