  • Installed my rear coilovers this afternoon, twice lol. The first time without the perches to see how low it would go, and the second time with the perches for a more permeant daily ride height.

Now to install the front I just need a 21mm offset wrench and 7mm allen key, it's the first time my tiny little tool box has ever let me down

    • Had some nutbag shoot a ball bearing at my car the other day - at least that's what I think it was.

Was around 10 to 5 on Thursday night and happened as I was waiting to turn left from Port Road into South Road ... Hit the window behind my driver's window with an almighty crack that made me jump in my seat. Left three small marks close together on the window, though didn't crack it ... Thing is my driver's window was down about 20cm so it could have been a lot worse if I'd copped it full in the face. There's an overgrown vacant block of land on the opposite corner with some kind of derelict structure on it so was thinking it might have come from there, but it's anyone's guess - was on the way to pick up new strut top mounts/bearings so didn't have time to check it out further.

Now for the coilovers... I've booked in with the guys over at Camden GTI to get those installed, it's a bit of a trek from the east, but I think it'll be worth it from what I hear... so watch this space...

PS - excuse very basic iPhone photos...
im liking it! lowered right thats going to be awesome. I vote colourcoded trims later on. black wheels on that colour look nice!

VWfresh once you have the stock springs out its easy... undo one end of the shock (i normally do bottom), then just stand on the hub and the spring falls out haha. get some pics up

RolfGolf, sounds a bit odd. hopefully not to much damage done.

so after dragging my front lip, subframe, and catalytic converter over the red bluff carpark (FU Parks Victoria)
then drove back to bairnsdale and could hear a rubbing noise... driving up my driveway which cambers both ways i could hear dragging. turns out the plastic tray is torn and hanging in a few points

        • Once I dropped one side of the shock it's wasn't hard at all.

I spent the morning trying to install the front but couldn't for the life of me undo the top mount. I just couldn't get a strong enough grip on the allen key to stop it from spinning, so after about an hour and a few broken tools later I put it back together FML...
Apart from that it's such an easy job I really don't want to pay someone to do it.

I used an allen inside a socket holding it with all sorts of things and a big ass spanner around the top of the socket.

          Any tips?

          • I think I used vice grips and another person to undo the top mounts. Much easier with a second set of hands. Also used a really good 7mm Allen key - its about 200mm long with a nice grippy handle
Keep at it. It will move!!

On another note my KW v1 coilovers rocked up yesterday. Gonna see what happens with my wheel plans before fitting.
Question about wheels. If I have 18's will I not need to lower it much as I would have to with 17's to achieve a decent stance? Et31 up front and et 21 in the rear with 7.5" if all goes to plan

            • told you they were easy haha.

audi-tone, depends what you call decent, vortex would say 17s have to be slammed on the ground to work. vww can pull off at just about any height. its not just height, widths, offsets, tyre size all play a part in the final look

              • Indeed.
                Rims are 18x7.5"
Final ets will be f-31 r-21.

                *if all goes to plan!*

I'm 25" fender to ground (not the best method I know) all round on 17's but I find that even a little low around the suburbs.

                • get it down closer to 24" with equal tyre-to-arch gap all round and it will look fine.
not going to be crazy fitment or anything, but will be a big improvement over stock thats for sure, turn heads, and not draw to much police attention hopefully

the way i got the tops undone was just with a Spark plug socket like this one
Stuck the allen key through it, Used a spanner on the spark plug socket. And on the allen key i found a small bit of tubing which i slipped over the end so i had enough force to hold it in place while i undid it with the spanner and spark plug socket.

Just find something that you can slide over the allen key to get a bit more leverage and you'll be right!

                      • Yeah that's exactly what I used except the tubing I used multiple pairs of pliers etc. I was thinking if I cut the allen key in half and still use the big socket I could use a 7mm socket on the end of the allen key and the length of the wrench might give me the leverage.

I was keen to have another crack today, but CBF right now.

                        Cheers for the help fella's.

This is how it was after leaving Camden GTI, but I'm going to bring the rears up a little, to make the gaps more even. Also, finding the fronts handling bumps etc quite well, but the back is a little rigid, and this IS my daily drive. So, I'm off to do that. So happy already...

I'll go get another one right now, while the sun is good...

                              • Given that they will still settle a tiny bit, theres no need to lower them any more for a daily. I think you have the heights looking damn nice. You should definately be happy with that!

Have you checked lowest clearance point underneath by any chance?
