Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk4 Golf 1.6 Automatic Transmission Issues

    Hi Guys,

Just bought a 2001 Mk4 Golf 1.6 with Automatic Transmission.

The main issue is when I shift to reverse, both from park and neutral, there is a significant jolt as soon as the lever reached the reverse position. Apart from this the car drives well, possibly the shifts could be a little smoother but nothing too bad and the torque converter locks up perfectly when on the highway.

I've changed the transmission fluid and filter and also changed the bottom dogbone engine mount.

NOTE: this only happens when shifting to reverse not any other gear.

Any ideas on what this could be?

    Cheers

    Sam

      Thanks mate,

Hope it is that as not too expensive and something I can do myself - think I'll give it a shot
