Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Reverse lights not working

Have a 2003 Mk4 Golf auto which I bought over 2 years ago for a daughter.

It runs well but a while ago noticed that the reverse lights are not working. Did the usual checks (globes, fuse, etc) but no joy.

Have had it inspected twice but they cannot definitely narrow it down without spending more time to diagnose. During the last inspection, they also found that it can be started in reverse. They are suggesting a possible faulty transmission control unit and/or multi function switch, but these are just educated guesses.

I also get my 2014 Mk7 GTI serviced at the same place and they are usually very good, but I'm reticent to fund them for more hours to diagnose (they want at least another 2-3 hours) the Mk4 issues when I suspect they have had enough time to find the cause.

Can anyone recommend somewhere in Adelaide who specialises in this type of issue?

    Which workshop are you using?

I know most of the VAG specialist workshops really only want to service the modern cars as they're quick and (relatively) easy $.

I'd probably recommend looking for a decent auto electrician rather than taking it to a general mechanical workshop as it sounds like you're chasing an electrical problem/gremlin (unfortunately mk4's have a few). Perhaps talk to German Auto and/or AVW and ask them who the'd recommend. I'm sure they would probably prefer to handball this sort of work anyway.

      German Auto.

Spot on, that's the reason for the original question.

Have a chat to Andrew @ GA and see who he would recommend.

Have already had a long chat with them, but will be there Tues so will revisit the discussion.

They're usually pretty good, so will see.

          Cheers.

            Finally sorted this out.

Traced it back to Park/Neutral Relay 175. Picked up one for $7 from the wreckers.
