  • Front door lock

Is your front door lock freely spining and will not lock ? Most likely it is the hook on the Connecting rod is broken.

It was a breeze to change. I got my Heavy Duty lock set from Tooleys for ~$80. It was a bit pricey as it is a modified heavy duty verion of the OEM lock set.

    DIY time ~ 1 hr.

Disassemble door handle from door, use allen key. ( Note no need to remove door card nor window regulator, THANK rayray086)

Firstly, the locking mechinism on the lock excentric must be transplanted, this can easly done with a long nose pliers.

    Transplanting Spring from OLD

    To New

Lubed up. Note: DO NOT USE WD-40!!!! Lock mechanism will violently eject when pulling key out. pain in the azz to line inorder again. Use Vaseline instead !!!!!

Lube up key with vaseline and insert into key hole a few times.

Assemble lock as per picture. (Thanx vortex)

    Ghetto touch up.

    Assemble into car.

The thing you have labelled as the lock eccentric is in fact the barrel.

The lock eccentric, or connectiing rod is no 15 on that diagram. That is the bit that usually breaks and can be replaced on its own.

      Otherwise nice writeup.

In about 2 minutes with a Seat part which is thicker and stronger... thanks Loon

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Any tricks to remove the door handle itself louis? Specifically the metal tab part which hooks onto the plastic door handle?

They paddle eccentric can only be bought as bigger, thicker one from VW, the old type was superceded mate. FUnny thing i found with them is that people force the lock round against its will. Really you only need to give the lock a quick flick as the lock has a microswitch. The microswitch only needs a slight tap to trigger. If you are ever stuck you can put the passenger one on to get you out of trouble.

Thats all all I do, hit the switch and let the central locking open the doors, sure when that dies I'm screwed, but till then!

I get the ones from SEAT for the 2dr Ibiza and they fit in the earlier Mk3 locks.

Hey Pedro, ask Ray to show you the door handles! There's a really easy way to do it and I'm sure it'll be too hard to understand my typing but i'll try

For drivers door all you need to do to get it out is unscrew it as usual, then slide the whole handle towards the front of the car, give the lock a turn to the right and pull it out. the little tab will be clear of the latch it gets locked into so it'll slide right out.
And of course, to get it back in you basically have to put the door handle back in, and when it comes to turning the key turn it fully right push it in and let the latch hook on (you'll feel the difference after, it'll activate your door lock/unlock)

You need an alan key, the lock is held in by 1 alan bolt, located where the door locks on the chasis.

Is it the "hook" that snaped ?? I am sure you can just replace that, but I got my kit from Tooleys Imports came with the complete "barrel", spring and hook.
