  • LPG Conversion on the VR?

    Howdy Guys,
Posted this up in fuels and lubricants section but didn't get much of a response so I've bunged it in here

Considering the ever escalating price of petrol I'm considering an LPG conversion for my VR6. Anyone on here ever done it or know of anyone who has? Any issues or tips I should know about and is it a good or bad idea? Should I run straight gas or dual fuel?

    Cheers
    Simon

I've heard rumors that the govt. pricks are getting everyone to convert with good prices now but they're losing money on the current price of gas and in a small while (maybe a year or two) the prices are going to boom... and by that I mean three times as much as it is now

Knowing my luck that's exactly what would happen

I know they are steadily increasing the excise on LPG between now and 2012, 5c a litre per year or something i think? Either way I don't think the price rise will be as crazy as petrol.

Thanks for the info Robin, gonna go and see the local gas place tomorrow for a quote. I think in Canberra the waiting list isn't as long as most people down here buy their cars on salary sacrifice which includes fuel so they don't bother with LPG. Either that or they earn too much, damn public servants!! Oh...that's me

I contemplated going LPG on my VR6 a few months ago. I even started a thread here. In my limited research I found no VW-related examples of LPG conversion but wouldnt imagine it would be to the detriment of our trusty VR6 donk.

What I am interested in though, is if anybody has done a NGV (natural gas for vehicles) conversion on any VW model. There is a growing argument for NGV and its a darn sight cheaper then LPG. Interesting eh?

I'm sure I have seen that done, it's an interesting idea, but I would want to see the cost of the conversion + the running costs + replacement costs of batteries. You also need to consider how far it can drive, which may limit your application.

Hyrid is an alternative, but have you checked out the stats on the Toyota Prius, it's expensive to buy, has a shorter lifespan on the batteries (which cost a fortune) and it's no more fuel efficient than a comparible Diesel car.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

And it contributes more to global warming that any other car due to materials needed for it's production. Great Idea Toyota

vw are making a hybrid golf soon - see this article on vwvortex: http://www.vwvortex.com/artman/publi...cle_2347.shtml

it shows that they were toying with the idea of an all electric golf all the way back in the 90s...

all fuel is going to go up. I predict LPG faster than others, but when the CSIRO say that unleaded will reach $8/L by 2018, is it really that much of a bad investment?

I am a little scared by that announcement, we talk about having 'touch points' when it comes to pricing. $1.00 a litre was one. It was a game of will we go there... will we go there, then BAM, prices well over that were the norm, similar things happened at $1.50/L but there hasn't been [as] much noise over $1.60 or $1.70/l $2.00/l I'm sure will make a lot of noise too.

But now with an announcement that "prices are expected to be..." it makes the market think it's OK to raise prices to meet expectations, even if it's not warranted. It also means the users are more accepting of price rises, afterall they were warned.

It's scary to think that driving in the way we currently do may be a thing of the past, bad news especially for a country with large distances between... well everything.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

man if you wanna go gas go straight gas as you will get the optimum performance out of it.

there is a company called Gas research which do gas converters and throttle bodies for gas cars (namely commos and falcons) but they are probs the best system that i know of.

have a look at sequential Vapor injection. Its the ducks nuts of LPG regulation. EzeGas does it, and they did ther're XR8, and its making more power now, than it did on petrol!
