Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

    97 Mk3 GL 1st gear selection issues....

    Lately 1st gear is becoming hard to select with the shifter. I have no other issues with selecting any other gears, it doesn't pop out of gear, doesn't select the wrong gear etc...
    Seems I really have to slam the gear lever to get it into first. Occasionally when it goes into first it clunks like the clutch is not fully engaged properly.
    Any ideas on what it could be?

    Linkage problem , after all they are 20 years old.

      The bushes in the linkages are plastic and they break and fall out. That makes too much slack in the linkage. Get a refresh kit. They are pretty cheap and relatively easy to fit.
