Just noticed I've got a bit of a weird noise coming from the front of the car somewhere (VR6). I'm no mechanic so I've got no idea if its something minor or if i should stop driving the car right away. Basically when I drive in first gear I get a low pitched churning kinda sound which gets worse as revs raise. The best I can describe it is kinda like a flicking/churning sound... like getting a card sticking it thru the spokes in a bike wheel then turning it. Kindve a ticking or flicking sound with a low churning. Pretty annoying. Sounds pretty bad too. Does anyone have some words of advice for me? Any ideas what it is? Thanks in advance

If it's only in first gear then you can still drive it! Just use 2nd gear and higher revs when startingI'm sure if you take it to a VW mech he'll diagnose it for you and you can grab parts accordingly
sorry there's no advice from me, good luck mate

Thanks for the input much appreciated. Hmmm it seems to be something to do with 1st gear as it only ever happens in that gear... ill try and narrow the problem down tomorrow on the way to work. Eh well at least if somethings shagged ill have the money to repair it in my tax return. But i was hoping to spend that money on awesome mods

Just got it looked at and its the transmission. Am I right in thinking I've got an 02A in there? I've been told it would be best to source a used transmission and swap it. Ive also been told these are rare and also probably not in good nick... I wonder if a rebuilds possible. Either way i know i'll be up for some huge costs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Last edited by VR6child; 04-07-2008, 05:10 PM.

While a 2nd hand replacement might sound cheap, there is no question you should go for a rebuilt unit. Better than finding out your second hand one is bum and doing this again in 3 months...
While your there you may as well do the clutch, you've already done half the work in taking it out!

just gonna put it out there.
timing chain?
is it rattling grindy sorta sound coming from the right hand side of the engine right where it meets up with the gearbox? if so then i'll put like 100 bucks on the timing chain and guides and cogs being worn.
other wise i got no idea. will need more detail.
thats my 0.02c

ok nvm i didnt read the last post before my last one.
ya rebuilt unit would be best idea. might be able to find a rebuilt one somewhere on forums. or go to a transmission workshop and see how much they'd take from you to rebuild your crapped out trans.
0.02c more.
you have 0.04 of my cents now!

Hmmm okay so after more inquiries I need a first gear cog and a cluster gear. I will expect some outrageous price when I ring the dealer tomorrow. What other alternatives are there for sourcing these parts? If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks.

Bloke took it out for a test drive, and I told him what the problem was. Its basically a horrible ticking kinda sound that gets faster as the revs raise. Only ever in first. All other gears are fine. Apparently he couldnt diagnose it 100% but mentioned 1st gear mightve chipped a tooth. Also said that bearings need to be replaced. Does his solution for the problem sound alrite? Seems like a reputable joint.

Your Box is an 02J. It`ll be shockingly expensive to fix. Id just drive it gently in first and it`ll be right for years.sigpic Camden GTI Performance. VW / AUDI Specialists

Guys the box in this car is an 02A as it is a "R" chassis 1H golf. The 02J is fitted to the 1J golf which is Mk4. Still a dear wee box to do. Ticking noise could well be that and if you were in there you would do the bearings anyway. Again could be that having it is in only 1 gear. I was with the timing chain remark too at 1 stage but that would happen when stationary.
Drain the oil and have a looksky to see if there is any shiny stuff or bits , that would give you a bit of a clue as to the health of the trans. Hmm if it is i would roll with the Loon and be gentle in 1st
