From a GL owner's perspective, they're not too bad! Engines are known to last a good deal, but like most people have said, things to look out for are the electricals. One of my sensors were playing up which caused a good deal of fuss, but other than that, I haven't had any trouble (until I started modding and changing parts around, but that's another story). Earlier models (1994, that had the 2E engine with a longer inlet manifold) didn't have this sensor so they would pretty much be quite trouble-free. If you're looking for a runabout, the GL or CL would be the better choice. If you're in the mindset that you want to chase power and willing to fork out the money for that, VR6 might be the better base. My $0.02!

Uni is an excuse when you have no money =P
I've got about 5g saved and the pay I get each week from working weekends (around $150) goes to petrol and going out, although with the Polo and it's insanely good fuel economy I should be able to save a lot of money with that.
I would like to sell the Polo but I don't know if I should straight away, I might wait at least until end of year...or until I get ****ty with the lack of power.

Polo's aren't that bad mate, just think of it like this: because you haven't got much power you're not inclined to use your right foot as much so you're saving bucketloads of money from fuel!
I'm a stubborn bastard so I went straight for the VR, and I'm still in high school. It sucks cos everyone has the ability to buy and modify things easily but I have to wait and prepare and save blah blah blah lol. I'm getting there though...
I'd say it would be a good idea to keep the polo a while and then when you're a little more comfortable on the financial side of things start looking into golfsMrk Detailing, premium automotive detailing. Paint correction/protection specialist. PM me
