Ok, looking to buy a golf for my next car as my corolla is going down the drain...anyway, is there any difference between the GL and CL apart from the engine?

Also, I did a search but couldn't find anything, but what are common problems with Mk3 golfs?

CL is 1.8 and GL is 2ltr...

Yeah, I noticed that, just wanted to know if there are any other differences. Now that's sorted just gotta find the common problems and then find a good one

CL I think had manual windows as well. GL had the power windows. Not much of an improvement really, as the power window regulators tend to break down a lot. There should be other stuff...
          Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
          Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

lol, sure. It's got a blown gasket and needs a new engine. It has been sealed and been running for about 3 months, so I'm just waiting for it to blow again...

I'm thinking of putting a 4AGE in and then try to sell it off for $4000-4500 so I can get a golf.

And I was thinking of getting a VR6 but I had a look around and they seem to have a fair few complications and I'm only a uni student so I don't have much munnies to spend on cleaning everything up. If I can sell the 'rolla for 4 grand I'll have like $9000 to spend.

I'll have a decent look around and see what I can find

took me about 2.5 months (of which i was on a 3 month license suspension haha) to find a really good one for 8.5k so as neill said patience is the key!
                        96 VR6 Yo!

just be patient like these guys say. i got my vr6 about amonth or 2 ago and i started looking on and off since last.....august? this one wasnt even advertised though, just fell into my lap so to speak. only will come up youll like

only thing to think about with the vr6's though is the fuel. and the timing chain.

with lots of short trips im averaging around 10.5-11l/100km, with longer trips with less stop start it gets down closer to 9-9.5l/100km. even longer trips and especially on freeways, the lowest ive gotten it with out really trying is around 7.9l/100km. it can get a bit lower im sure but i have a heavy foot sometimes

timing chain is important. if it hasnt been done and you cant do it youself (its a B!+ch of a job, dont bother if you dont have a hoist) you might wanna think twice about that particular one. there are plenty you there with them changed already.

but like these guys have said, just be patient

when you do get one, everytime you put your foot down that freakin roar will make you go back home to change your pants

mk3's, will do windows regs and a box if it gets enough km's on it.

thats what i fixed on them at work all the time...
"stu rip the gearbox oout of that one and send it to bakers" dean
"isn't that the same car?" stu
                            "no...just the 10th white mk3 this week " dean

other than that...awesome car! get one!!!!!!

as stu said the gear boxes on the GL and CL mk3's will shatter if you breath on them. the VR6's, from what i understand, can stand stage one turbo and superchargers, so they are wicked

window regulators break on mk3's, vr6's cooling systems (heatercores especially break a bit, preventitive maintanance is the key apparently) umm...thats all i can think of at the moment. i've had two bottles of wine so that cant help.
other than that i think they are a very reliable car. especially the GL's and CL's. but they arent fast
