  • Running Rough

My car's been burning a bit of oil lately. Smelt a bit of a burning smell last night, like metal friction, oil was pretty low so I topped it up. Started it up this morning, seemed ok then I stalled it whilst I was looking for the garage buzzer. Then when starting up again it runs really rough, like not all cylinders firing or it's missing but i have had the leads done recently but not sure about the plugs. Any diagnosis? The whole car chuggs/vibrates from the engine. I was told my engine mounts were worn, maybe they've given up?

If it sounds or feels like it's misfiring, then it still might be your sparks...or coilpack...

Problem happened to me only a week ago..the bloody thing idled like a truck, it was horrible! Look for sparks around coil and in the spark pots

How do you check something like this...computer? I had weird idling problems every now and then about three months ago after I put in a pod

You can run a scan to see what errors the car has been/is throwing up. There are a few of us round the shop with a VAG-COM and a cable or one of those hand held jobbies. If your ever out my way I can scan for you

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

you can also do a test on the sensor with a voltmeter. it written up in the Bently's MK3 Golf Jetta manual.

Cheers for the advice guys, turns out it is the coil pack. VW quoted by mechanic $1050! got a second hand one from Matt so that's sorted. Got plugs from peps spares, 6 for $70! bargain, that's trade price but still they said they're normally $16.95 retail. Better than the $38 VW quoted my mechanic!
Hopefully I can get her back on the road on Monday!

I know there is a shipping cost and we are a long way from other places...but the fun part is that if you import the parts from GAP in New York plugs are less than US$7 each yet VW Australia can justify $38 each! anyway...
