Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 95' Mk3 Golf VR6 Gearbox Reliability

Hey Guys, Complete newbie, But have joind due to the fact that i have aquired a 95 vr6 golf.
I'm at the point where i can re-register my current ride, or get the vr6 on the road.

The only problem with the car is if i get it on the road with the little money I have and she breaks, I'm without a car.

Motor has done 140k (rebuilt) and runs like a dream, so im not worried about that, my only concern is running gear. I will be changing wheel bearings and sus' bushings myself but the box has done 290k (5 speed manual).

Tranny oil was changed every 50k i beleive but she has been man handled a little.

Any info towards the reliability of the box would be a great help.

Thanks and i hope to become vdub man!
