Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • After market central locking kits

    Hey guys,

It's been a while since I've been on here, pretty busy with xmas around the corner, any hoo....

I was planning on fitting a central locking kit to my CL and was wondering if any one has tapped into the original system? As it doesn't have remote central locking but has actuators already which are triggered by the key in either driver or passenger door lock. The after market kit I have comes with actuators but I figured there's no point removing the originals if I can simply tap into the original system so that it can be simply activated via remote.

Wiring isn't my strong point so I was wondering if any one has already done this with a Mk3 and how they have gone about it? Wiring diagrams etc?

    Any help is appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Beau

Do you have a Lock/ unlock button in the car somewhere? If so wire the kit into the button. using a multi meter you will be able to find out what wires from the button are used for lock and unlock and then wire in the outputs from your kit to that.

Search the forum, I think I have posted about this here somewhere including wiring colours needed. Probably in my thread. Buy the $18 kit off eBay. Wire into existing box that is in the boot.
Boom, keyless entry for the price of 2 pizzas.

Bought the cheap ebay one (15$), installed it (about 2 hours of my time), and it was great for about 3 weeks. Then i think it got out of whack with the pump, and would lock one side and not the other. Checked all the vacuum lines, nothing. Key wouldnt lock at all sometimes. Wouldnt recommend it, its a nice addition but after installing i realised it kinda ruins the quirkiness of an old car.

Odd, mine still works great ages later. Maybe you received a faulty one?

The RClick ones from the UK are supposedly one of the better remote keyless systems. Apparently they can be wired in to also auto-close and auto-open your windows (if you run power windows) when you hold onto the buttons. Never tried it personally though.
