Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • WA- MK3 020 Transmission WANTED- Stuck in 3rd gear

Sooo I may have fallen victim to the dreaded 020 5spd Manual gearbox stuck in 3rd gear syndrome... Does anyone have a 5spd available for purchase here in WA, or failing that, is there someone that will swap/rebuild/sell me a trans for less than the $1320 + postage to get a box in from Washington?

    I appreciate ANY responses guys!
    Cheers,

    J-Mac

is it the syncro, or the gear linkage bushings? I lost some of the bushings due to a small water leak onto the rubbers which destroyed them, once replaced the gearbox was back to normal

I wish it was just the linkage. We had a crescent spanner on the actual lever on the box with a 3 foot pipe over the end and it still wasn't budging from 3rd. Clutch still operates normally so its not anything to do with the throw-out or anything. This is a pretty major f$ck-up in the German gearbox black magic department...

The syncro must have gone, any "clunking" in the box? (caused by bits floating around in the oil?) Not sure if this would help, might be worth a try, go into the gearbox access port and see if you can see any bits in the oil - you may have to drain some oil to do this (its not easy to get back in either).
