Do you have a high res top down picture?

If you can get one cheap and easily, why not?

I'll try and get one. I'm not experienced with electronics but it looks fine!

Don't worry about the orange stuff as it's just a coating to protect the PCB and components.

What does the other side of the ECU look like?

The other side is a massive heatsink for the huge array of transistors there because they get hot. They also might be the cause of the failure, but you'd need to check each one.
Based on all the surface mount components I'd guess there is barely anthing on the other side.

I would be looking at the other side where the ECU plug is. As you have said that the other side has heatsink on it then I really wouldn't be surprised if it's that side that has the issues.

Even if it looks alright, remember, solder joint cracks can be really small and it only takes one to mess it up.
Just re-flow the connector and other spots that look like they might need to be taken care of too.

I think I might take it to an electronics repair place to fault find.

Get them to check it out for faults and repair any they find.

I'm happy to spend a little money on a possible repair for the ECU/Module before ripping out the pump and replacing that.

Unfortunately not so well. Pretty much every electronics place I tried said they couldn't do it.

I spoke with VW and they said it's a process of elimination.

Basically on the hunt for an ABS ECU with the same part number as mine, so I'll try that 1st and see if I can clear the codes.

If/ when you get a replacement I would still be keen on seeing the faulty part
