Dreaded ABS Issues

Hey Guys,

So had my VR6 scanned and it came up with the following codes:

00276 - ABS Outlet Valve, Rear Left
00290 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor, Rear Right
00287 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor, Rear Left

Okay so basically after about a weeks worth of searching, I'm going crazy.

Some people are saying that the 1st code is a failed ABS pump and if replaced, the other 2 codes will disappear.

Some people say different, but I'm all fine with this.

I'm happy to replace the ABS pump and both sensors if needed but my issue is this.

Do I need a specific ABS pump or does it need to be coded to my car?. I've found 1 on eBay which I was going to buy but I'm having reservations now because of all this coding talk.

I guess my question bottles down to this: Can I buy any ABS pump/control module from another VR6 and throw it into my car or does it have to be a specific one? And does it need to be coded?

Mine is a 1995 OBD1 VR6.

Hey mate, I had the same issue on my OBDII 98' Model VR6 MkIII

It ended up being the ABS control module, its pretty common for board connections to go dodgy after time requiring a decent solder repair job. Mine was fixed after RWC despite when I bought it and they had to fix it for free, so can't give you a price guide sorry mate.

Ahh nice! Okay well at least it might just require a repair to the module instead of a new pump and module.

Mine has every code related to abs possible. Removed the abs module and re soldered all the large soldered joints on the board. Put it back in and reset the codes and all has been perfect since.

Was it obvious which areas needed to be re-soldered?

I might give that a shot and see what happens. Should the ABS warning light go off after reinstalling the module? And then I follow up by wiping the codes?

I soldered all the large pins through the board. And most of the input pins. Look for dry joints and you should be fine. Yeah just remove the module, it Is held on the bottom of the abs pump by 4 8mm head bolts and remove downwards. Replace and clear the abs codes and hopefully it should be good.

Ahh awesome! Yea I'll definitely give that a go. Even if it doesn't work it isn't costing me anything.

I'll also use a multi meter against the rear ABS sensors and make sure they're reading the correct voltage and replace if required.

If neither of those work, I'll just replace the module!

Okay... So it turns out my VR6 is one of the ones where the ABS/EDS controller is separate from the ABS pump and is under the rear seat, making things 100 times easier.

I removed it and took it apart and it looks perfect, no loose parts, circuit board looks great.

Is there any checks I can do to check this sole part for operation?

Seriously hoping it's not my actual pump that's gone, think it's too big of a job to tackle myself!

Have you inspected the solder joints? I get a few vags a month where the solder joints are dry.

So that's what that box was under the rear seats that I found ages ago.

Haha yea, they changed it to a module and pump combo just under the expansion tank in about 95-96 I think.

I'll take it apart again and check but it looked perfectly fine to me :S.

Okay so I pulled it apart again and these are the photos. Everything looks fine apart from 1 part...
Anyone have any idea what that orange stuff is? Looks like it burst :S.

Think I might track down a new ECU and try that 1st before going whole hog and forking out for a new pump.

That thing is a crystal oscillator, they don't burst like that (actually, they don't burst at all). Just looks like someone dropped some glue accidentally as there is also some of it on the other ICs.

Ahh okay, you think it might be worth trying another ECU anyway?
