  • Vr6 Wanted

    Hi All,

I am looking for a late model (97 or 98 ) VR6 which someone is willing to part with. I missed out on a cracker in NSW last week, 58K, 1 owner etc.

Understand it is extremely rare to find them in this condition, but do not want a thrashed ex boy racer effort with a bean can exhaust, as unmodified as possible would be great.

Just putting a request out there, if anyone can be of any help that would be great.

    Cheers

    BB

There was only a couple of hundred 97-98 Model VR6s sold in Oz, so good luck.

Its a bit like trying to buy a one lady owner WRX, they dont exist. VR6s go hard and are driven accordingly.

But they are out there. Just gotta be patient.

I would not settle for one that has signs of abuse or a few problems. Its definately worth waiting around for a decent one to come up.

other wise you will be spending alot of $$$ on replacement parts. and thats not fun.

I have a 96 VR6... which is driven like a 96 VR6, but it has a new heater core, new AC, new bushes, new suspension, new engine mount... and so on.
It may work for it, but it's well looked after.

Just pointing out that if you can't find a perfect example, the commonly broken parts are only a few thousand to replace them all with new parts. Yeah it may sound expensive, but a $6k car with issues + $4k worth of work is probably going to end up a better car than a $10k 'original' (which simply means the parts are going to break soon...)

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Hawk makes a valid point. If you do find a neat vr6 in the 6000 dollar mark its worth spending the $3000 in replacement parts. And it will be better than an original.

I just ordered a complete Samco hose kit for my VR as 2 hoses have already gone in a space of 2 months of each other and already I feel like ive done the right decision. Hoses are a problem on VR's with 150,000+ ks along with other bits n pieces mentioned buy the other VR nuts here

Good luck with your search mate.

Put it this way I have spent brand new on the car $7.5 and it was a very good condition one thats for sure. I only really have had to spend about $3.5 maybe on maintenance parts. As for modding put it this way I could have bought a mk4 gti with a K04 conversion by now

tassie_euro_mk1 is right, they do exist, but the owners are quite reluctant to let go of them! There's an aircooler guy (don't know if he's on here as well) that came to one of our Pizza GTGs and he turned up with a sub-50K km VR6, genuine clocks!

                            Cheers

Thanks for the advice lads, some excellent points there that I will consider.

It will be hard to find a vehicle with reasonable km's but I guess the hunt continues...that's half the fun innit.

                            I love Golf's and have had mk2 gti, mk3 gti and a mk4...the VR6 is a classic...and the holy grail I reckon, a proper collector motor nowadays.

Thanks for your helpful advice, you've been gentleman.

                            Cheers
