Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • mk3 wont start

hi guys just after some advise while I wait for a scan tool to arrive to hopefully get some codes.
    mk3 golf 2.0 agg 10/97 build date

To start with I had a bad crankshaft sensor (insulation had fallen off and was causing a short). replaced with new one.
second did an oil change and replaced breather from block to pvc. nothing to involved.
when done tried to start and just cranked over, so check for spark from coil lead nothing.
maybe bad crankshaft sensor so I unplugged it, turn key to on and ground out the centre trigger wire. I get injector pulse, throttle control but no spark.
ok on to the control of coil I have power and ground on the 2 outside terminals and no voltage on the centre, led light on centre and ground crank over and still nothing? so tried centre to positive same result?
to make sure coil was good unplugged ecm turned key on and ground pin 7(ignition control) bam spark.

so in conclusion I have no out put from the ecm to control the coil but I have input to control injectors and throttle. tried a different ecm same thing.

does the immobilizer have anything to do with spark control? why would it let the injectors fire?

thanks guys any input would be greatly appreciated

regarding the immo.. I have worked on one of these and from memory the immo stops the injectors but not the starter, so I don't think your issue will be the immo

If there is any one in Adelaide with a MK3 if I can borrow the car for an hour I don't mind testing this... But I'm pretty sure it won't be the immo.

      cool thanks

that is what I thought as you would not want all that fuel being sprayed

      cheers

You said you tried a different ECM, I'm fairly sure the immo box is coded to the ECM so simply putting in a replacement one still wont work.. I think?

When you had the second ECM in did you recheck the injectors? ( I don't think there would of been one if the above is correct)

It could possibly be a faulty ECU not sending spark...

Geeez pretty certain you far off the problem, 2lt engines are a pretty bomb motor!
          Look at the simple things.

I got a very strong feeling it's the Mmmm (it's what ever the equivalent of a vr6 coilpack is for a golf gl engine).
          I think it's ignition coil.

yes I think I did have injector pulse with second ecm but will try again and ignition coil is good. I am leaning towards a bad earth somewhere and this is why the ecm cant fire the coil?

            cheers guys

ok so today I plugged in second ecm and I have control of injectors but after about 30 seconds nothing so I guess that is the immobilizer doing its thing.

does anyone no which pins on the ecm are used to ground? and where they would be grounding? I am presuming there is more than just pin no.1

              cheers
