  • VR6 Timing Chain repairers - Newcastle

    Hi everyone, I'm now the proud owner of a '98 Golf III VR6, and as an induction of fire mine has just started making a rattle which sounds very much like a timing chain Lucky it was cheap

    So, does anyone know of any good mechanics in the Newcastle area who will want to fix it, and won't try to rip me off?

    European auto centre and no one else. Trust me.

        Well, I visited some mechanics. European Car Centre was certainly the most helpful. But it looks like its going to be too expensive to get them to fix it, sooo...I'm going to attempt it myself, using the guides on VWVortex, and the workshop manual. This is going to be an interesting weekend.

          This is when it's worth considering just how far you want to take things... Engine out, coolant pipes, sensors and possible head work while you're at it...

          ... And of course a supercharger!

          Also consider water pump and AC while you have it apart and maybe heater core if you're feeling adventurous!

            Yes. They are the most expensive, hence why I didn't use them, tried to save myself $600 and ended up costing me 3k and no car for nearly two years.

                Yeah, you make a good point @The_Hawk, I think I'm going to stick with just the timing chain though, cause the less I do, the less I might break...and, there are only so many hours left in my life

                @mb1907953 - I never got a concrete price from anyone, but prices ranged from $2000-$4000 depending on what was actually wrong with it. I was prepared to pay $2000 as an absolute maximum, but when thats the 'best-case-scenario' price its not worth risking it.

                  Haha fair enough man. I was going to say if you could get it done for under 2000 definitely get a shop to do it otherwise bugger that.

                  I would definitely be doing the plastic cooling parts like the crack pipe and thermostat housing whilst you're there. Maybe even the clutch (AND CLUTCH FORK!!) if its got a fair few ks on it. Just so much easier whilst youre there.

                  I've had the gearbox out 3 times in the last two years and it just isn't fun on the wallet or for your time without a car.

                    From what I understand water pump and AC compressor are a PITA seriously worth considering while it's apart if there is any question about them (the water pump at least is very cheap, just a pain to get at).
