VR6 Oil Cooler

Anyone installed one of these things? Where did you get it? How Much? Worth while?

I'm in two minds about this... I'm running Fuchs 10W40 full synthetic oil and got the oil temp up to 126C at the track yesterday. On one hand thats waaay too hot, on the other I don't go to the track. Oil is getting replaced today with a recommended mineral oil in 20W50 or there abouts so it should deal with temperature a little better.

I have thought about it to Aaron but I have been told unless you are going to a few track days a year then you should be fine.

I would have thought the synthetic oil would deal with the heat much better than mineral oil (Fuchs is the same as Mobil 1 iirc)

Well there is some Castrol GTX2 20w50 in there now, will see how that goes for a while. Still very much eyeing off that oil cooler... my Birthday is coming...

Ok why put in such a thick mineral oil when the owners manual specifies 10w-30 synthetic oil???? If you want something that will take the heat & not die, replace the oil with something suited to hard driving, ie penrite sin, motul 300v, etc.

The highest my oil temp has ever got with hard driving was 119c... but that was on a 40c day out in the country.

Oil coolers interest me, especially since my ride is hitting the track soonish (probably next month now ). The one that caught my eye was http://www.autotech.com/prod_engine_....htm#oilcooler

I looked at this too, tmtuning have a kit for 199usd. BBM also have a kit too and it was about 239usd for a braided kit from memory. Itd be cheaper to pick up just a mocal sandwich adapter, get some braided lines and fittings from summitracing in the us and buy a justjap 19 row oilcooler

Those JustJap ones are pretty meh. Few mates have bought them in the past and not happy with the build quality.They are really flimsy and you can pretty much bend them with your hands

My oil in the vr got quite hot the other day. Was up to 132deg before I backed off a bit. Not good.
Just about to try and fit a larger one like this. I'll let you know how it goes guys!

I reckon a cooler would be a good idea. I'd also say that the synthetic oil would be much better at coping with excessive temps without breaking down, than the 20/50.

When I fitted a cooler to my G60 in the UK I also removed the std heat exchanger. This had the double effect of dropping oil temps significantly and also removing the load from the water cooling system too.

In winter the temp needle barely made it off the bottom of the gauge and the oil temps rarely made it over 80 degrees. At the track, it would still get up to 140 but that was when you stayed out of 30 mins at a time going flat out. Oil temps started to drop within a few hundred metres of getting off the gas..

Is 80 a nice stable operating temp? What is too low? What is too high?

You know I'm still looking at these. The sandwich plate is a "Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate", I have seen generics, but everywhere I look the VR6 one is always the same Mocal VR6 version of this plate.

The rest of the kit looks decidedly off the shelf pipe, barbs and heat exchanger. I assume all these parts can be bought off the shelf of just about anywhere... but the qustion is, does anyone in Australia sell the Mocal part I'm looking for, or is it something to be imported?

Being a VR6 and all I think it's questionable if the sandwich plate needs to be thermostatic since the thing runs so hot anyway. This comes from wondering if there was another option available that could be adapted to the VR6. I have heard tell a beetle part may very well fit and do this... Does anyone have any knowledge in this area?
