I'm getting quite frustrated at the moment due to the rarity of Thule 404s. I really really really want a set on my car but they seem so hard to get your hands on. I've read through a lot of build threads and it seems you just have to trawl Gumtree, Ebay and here to find some when they come up. I read somewhere to look out for people selling Mk3s with them on it and just offer to buy then off the car.

Who here has bought a pair and how long did it take/ how did you eventually get them.

Luck of the draw honestly man. Mine popped up on gumtree and sat there for like a month before I nabbed them. Came with everything in a box too! Keep an eye out for a car with them. You'd be surprised how many have them.

Thanks Alex for taking the time to let me look at the seats in the car. Sorry I took nothing!

I think I'm gonna try work out how to take the Cruise control ECU out and get it fixed. Hopefully I can work it out

Such detailed instructions. You're a legend. Will try either tonight, or Monday. Had some problems with the car when driving it today. Its happened on one other occasion about 4 months ago. When down shifting the engine drops to 200rpm instead of idle ~800rpm. And often when stationary at the lights the engine will drop rpm and conk out completely which is a bit scary when in heavy traffic and I can't hear it do it.

Anyone have any clues what it might be? Last time it happened the problem seemed resolved when I drove it 'extremely spiritedly' for about 5 minutes. Will see what its like in the morning and add an update.

            Cheers

Take your time man. Its a bit of a fiddle but you'll get it. Just go have a beer and take a rest and then come back and it'll probably just pop in to place. Dunno about the sparks... Hopefully its all fine!

Got it jammed... then mum arroved home to save the day and helped me get it unstuck. Then I waited a minute and it slotted in rather easily. What a frustrating task!

I drilled out the fixed bolts either side of the bar, replaced them with removable ones so that I can slot the bar in and out. For that same reason.

Your idling issue could be the idle stabilizer valve (isv) if your car has one. Not sure.

I might have to try something similar I guess.

How do you know if the car has one? Wouldn't something like that be model specific in which case all Mk3 or Mk3 GLs have them?

                            Another update.

This morning I got to work giving the care some cosmetic care. Firstly I've removed the rear spoiler.

                            Here are some pics

I like the end result, however there are some marks around the top of the window that look similar to the marks that appear on a ceramic glass cook top. In the DIY tread it says that its difficult to remove all the sticky black silicon and it bloody is.

Good way to clean out the groove between paint and glass.

After doing this I though I might put my trusty scraper to the test and see if I could get that god-awful residue left on my bonnet from le evil red p-plate.

Sure enough with water and soap and some hard scraping it came off! Thank god. Bonnet looks good when its wet, but dry it still have some marks and smudges. I'll have to get these off another time. Excuse finger in photo .

Hey guys, bit of an update and question. Finally finished the matt black door mouldings and have put them back on the car. They looks good. Next step is to redo the top of the bumpers. Is it necessary to take them off the car and sand then undercoat before I topcoat them?

A little none update. Got some roof racks today. Now I just have to buy a bike carrier and fairing and it'll be schmick!
