  • Starting issue -at wits end- need help

Have a 94 VR6. went to start her on Friday Morning . no go. Has spark but wont start, By coincidence, tank very low night before to the point i would say it was pretty much empty. Idea to drive 300m down the road to servo and fill.

Seeing as down hil. tried to clutch start 4x and it wouldn't take. From what I can tell, I thought it may have been fuel pump as when you put on reds, you cant hear the pump kicking in. Have tried 2x different pumps and no good.
When installing, turn on reds, car getting spark, wont rank over - not getting any fuel. Tested relay and relay works fine.

Any ideas anyone? really need to get this thing organised, need her for work and I want to get her home.

Could it possibly be the ECU? just strange that ran out of fuel and now cant get fuel so to speak

    All help appreciated?

Does it kick over and die.

Or not kick over at all?

Not uncommon on older cars to run out of fuel and suck a lot of crap out of the tank and into the fuel filter

Just changed filter a week ago. Either way, wouldn't explain no noise or power coming from pump....

It gets spark from what i can tell. tried to kick over but wont. Doesnt sound like fuel pump is getting power, doesnt kick over. Ive tried 3. all fuses and relays working. No fuel going o motor as a result. Checked relay 109 as well to see if faulty and works fine.
Any ideas to get the fuel pump working?

It could be so many things... If you've replaced the pump twice with two supposedly good pumps then it probably wont be that. But stranger things have happened.

One problem I had was the RPM sensor which is on the front of the engine block (next to the oil cooler) It cranks but refuses to start and I wiggled it and played with it and got the car to fire. New sensor solved the issue. Have you got a VAGCOM? Or know of someone that has one? OBD1 may throw some sort of code.

Standard fuel pumps are ment to be quiet.
Best if u scan it first though.
Wait are you saying it won't crank over ??

Unfort I don't have a vagcom or know anyone who does. Yes..it wont start. It tries to turn over and won't. 4 mates and myself ended up pushing it about 500m home all up hill last night which was fun ..(not)... So at least close to work on. When I'm home from work, will continue to diagnose. Could even be crank sensor....who knows??. My chains are due to be done. Could just be coincidental, maybe timing is out and as a result, knock sensors won't allow injectors to fire. When home tonight, am going to undo fuel line into motor and try to start and see if it is getting fuel...

Maybe the running out of fuel has no relation to the issue what so ever, could just be coincidental

The starter motor can't crank it adequately?

That's a good test to do for sure

Would save me a **** load of time if i can get an error code of some kind. ANyone know if you can bring up error codes through the instrument cluster like you can with BM's?

That's one of the handy things about the TorquePro smart phone app with the blutooth car adaptor - it can show you fault codes
