  • VAG-COM in 1994 VR6

hey just wondering if this cable will work in my 1994 VR6 with OBD1 even though the ad says OBD2. is there a difference? im running VAG-COM 704.1

not sure.... VAG COM is a rip off these days, since the OG VAG COM changed their name to VCDS because (IIRC) of some legal implications with Volkswagen Group.

You might be better off borrowing a genuine VCDS cable, or visiting someone who has one.

I have used a genuine VCDS cable on a 95 Toledo with good results.

so it has to be the right cable for the car?
so i might just have to buy a genuine VAG-COM/VCDS cable?
or get someone else to do it.

The knocks off's use an old unlicensed version of VAG-COM and can't do "everything"... like clearing error codes has to be done module by module where the full version will do it with one click.

There isn't much to code/change in the 94 models, just reading error codes really.

So in reality a $25 eBay knock off will do pretty much everything you want., so you're probably better off with one of those hand held code scanners.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I use that exact same one with the free vcds program. Reads all the fault codes and can clear. I've got a '94 as well.
