Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • What's wrong with my VR6? Please Help

The video demonstrates the current situation of where my car is at.
Any ideas why it's running so badly?

It stutters and has no power. We've cleaned the air-flow metre and changed both spark plugs and leads.
    We're out of ideas...

(note the video is quite short)

    Please help!

That video doesnt give a great indication of whats happening. Is it revving like that itself or is the bloke on the throttle there revving it? Could be the coil pack on the side of the engine. Pretty common fault. Look up vr6 coilpack issues on google. Theres quite a few threads on how to diagnose them. One way is to get a spray bottle and spray a light mist of water over it to see if it sparks. If it does then its bung.

I would pull the coil pack off and apart and check for cracks.

Yeah, i know the video is abit *****, sorry about that.
It feels like one of the plugs has failed because it has no power when i accelerate. and even idling it is real lumpy and like... sputters.
Initially i thought it was the coil so we sprayed the coil pack and didnt see any sparks so we wrote that off. plugs and leads were shocking so we changed them. then i noticed a hole in the piping to the MAF so we changed that. still hasn't changed anything. Do you think it could still be the coil pack? not fuel/air mixture?

I haven't watched the video but I would be checking the coil pack very closely. Also double check your plug leads are in the right order it happens lol

How is the car starting up in the mornings or just in general?
It could be the idle valve? My start up was really rough and lumpy and it turns out I had a hole.
                Double check that!

that'l absolutely be it. Looks like someones already tried to repair it. If you're stingy you can take it apart and clean it all up and paint the black plastic in epoxy resin. It'll make it last forever but the problem is it looks kinda **** and obviously isnt an original job...

Looks like it could definitely do with a good lather in some epoxy.
