Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Bit of an Update.

Not much been going on lately. Really need to get off my lazy ass and get a job so I can spend money on the car again but just been keeping it all nice a cared for during the last few months. Haven't done much apart from the roof rack basket (for extra euro points). Just hit up the Euro Meet at Newmarket tonight and got to see some of the Awesome Rs, R32s, GTIs, Mk2s and even beatles running around the place. Went with Bryce who has the Red CC VR6 on here. See pictures below! Cheers to @sandwg for the photos.

    • Small update, fully sound deadened the car today and would highly recommend it to all mk3ers because they traditionally are pretty rattly cars... Audio has also been massively improved and it no long does that stupid metal vibration thing when theres a bit of bass. Road noise down and exhaust drone down. Awesome investment for 40 bucks!! (Didnt go the bloody dynamat).

Some pictures from the newmarket meet a few weeks back.

        • It begins!!! Cheers to Josh for the gear!

For a coilover noob, how do I know how high the car is going to sit depending on where the rings are sitting on the thread?]

You don't really know how it's going to sit until you put them in. Then you see how it's sitting and adjust from there

As a guide do 2" from the bottom thread on the front and 2.5" for the rear.

              • Hells yeah. Umm, I wrote down measurements between lock ring collars every time I set them, took the car off jacks, then took measurements off the height/wheel gap of the car so I knew roughly how much I had to adjust.
Can't find that piece of paper now, but HaydEn's 2" and 2.5" seems roughly right. Also depends how much you compress the springs (preload) and your soft/hard damping settings too.

                  • Very nice.

Those BFI mounts are so nice in a VR6.

                        • Fronts in! Managed to break off the f'ing brake line bracket. Will have to weld it back on or something. Going rally/ stock spec first while it sits in the garage (have some other jobs to do that require jacking the car numerous times) and then going to wind down after I sort everything out. Sorry smeeb, no commorake. Will do it when I wind the rears down. Not going super low... Uni speedbumps are absolute killers. Even with the stock gear!

Don't bother about pleasing that ****.

That's just about your limit in the rear with out great plates. That rubbed on the rear with any 'huge' bump at speed.

In all honesty, you can get away with 50mm lip the ground clearance everyday. I used to be lower than this; that involved going over speed bumps when I had the Mahles, getting beached and had to get a forklift to lift me off.

this height is 100% daily. Maxed low with helpers. 2-3" lower in rear with tuning arts.
