Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • The Twin! VR6 No.2

    Hi Guys,

After 2 long months of combing the internet for a VR6, I have finally found one that will replace my written off car. Picked her up last Tuesday from the gold coast and have begun what I like to call 'Stockification'.

Meet the 4th member of our golf family, a 1997 Black Magic VR6 with 150000 clicks! Excuse the photos, I will get some better ones this weekend.

    Which is almost identical to

The car had been slightly tinkered with here and there:

    Cold air intake
    Extractors
    Guard indicator delete
remote central locking (big story there)
    New Exceedy Clutch
    Chains at 135000
Exhaust (looks to be 3 inch)
BLACK tint (almost illegal I think...)
    18 inch boy racer rims
    badgeless grill
    euro Lip

Apart from that and the sunroof it is almost identical to my car. Plated 05/97 and even has a full leather interior.

So as you all know I love my originality and began what has proven to be an extremely drawn out process of converting it back to the way it came out of the showroom.

Looked like this at the start

And now has the stock VR6 grill, lip and fake foglights.

Leather has been swapped for mine and a few trim bits here and there.

The biggest story to go with it so far has been the wiring. Speaker wiring was all cut along with this monstrosity:

So I ended up pulling it all to bits and rewiring the speakers, radio power and tidying up the alarm and central locking wiring with new solder and heatshrink.

After a day I got the stereo working, vacuumed up the car and just tonight chucked in the new leather which looks great.

Next week will be mechanical work on the aircon compressor, abs, gearbox oil and heatercore bypass (for now)

THe only serious issues with the car involves the paintwork which has unfortunately copped a high pressure wash and the clear coat is starting to peel off. It also seems to have what looks like dried water droplets all over the roof and a wash and chamois didnt bring it out. Might have to break out the cut a polish and give it a good go but if anyone has knowledge in this area advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Will keep you all updated My wreck is for sale as well in the parts section so make me an offer and you could get your hands on a fully log booked 188000 VR6 engine.

hopefully youre changing the headlights too?

i was always 50 50 with those intake vents (instead of the fogs).

if they were functional, id get some, but theyre not.

wanna sell me your euro lip (if theres not a gap)?

        look forward to your updates

Would a good buff and polish bring up a slightly faded paint job? Its a little lighter than my wreck which is interesting

Never hurts to try. My roof is faded and milky I cut and polished thrice to no avail. If anything it'll just make your car shinier.

mmm yeh its definitely not as shiny or glossy as it could be but Im worried that maybe the undercoat has faded or something. Oh well, might be a roof respray in the future. Any ideas on crappy radio signal?

the wire was a little loose in the plug but thats about it. Would that reduce by signal though? I dont have AM either...

I don't know in that case. Take it to a electrical mechanic.

Great to hear you've been able to find new machine, especially one practically identical to your last one!

I have those vents on my car, I dont think they really do much but they look awesome

All the best with the project
