Regarding the paint, the base coat wont have faded, it will just be the clear which can normally be machine polished out. I've done 6 or 7 mk3's now, most of them have scrubbed up really nice I can take a look at the paint if you like and could give it a full detail to bring it back to life for cheap if you're interested (not trying to steal the thread and promote myself or anything, but thought I'd throw it out there)

Nice pickup mate, good luck getting it all tidy again. I remember this car when it had the smaller 5 spokes as the owner used to work at zaraffas coffee in Helensvale. They never returned my VW wave. Still it was a nice car from memory.

Despite the bmw I hear Ben certainly knows a thing or two about paint. If you want to offload the fake intakes give me a yell I'd love to try them on the Vento

So the work continues. Transferred the wreck's aircon compressor over today but didnt have the tools to undo the pips off the old one... Hence the growth that is hanging out the front there! haha.

Couple of issues if come across:

            1) Noticed a dodgy throttle response in first when I really give it a boot. Turned out to be the big black corner pipe that joins onto the throttle body.

It seems to be melting because of the heat off the extractors. Anyone have an idea on how to reduce the heat it is exposed to? THe stock heat shield doesnt fit the extractors.

            2) the left mirror wont move up and down. it goes left and right though. have replaced the motor mechanism from the wreck which works but no luck!

            3) Where can I buy some of those crappy door handle seals??

            4) Clearcoat... Any advice on how to do some cheap repairs or atleast slow its growth? Its like a bloody cancer.

Sorry Joe, Intakes are gone mate. I thought you were going OEM anyway!?

Leaking transmission oil where the gearbox joins the engine block. Anyone got any ideas?

                      Have a VERY CLOSE LOOK
It could just be, that your cam cover gasket is leaking oil out the side/front/back and is leaking down a spot where you carnt see.
                      Otherwise
Extractors melting you intake pipe, I know someone who has had extractors on his vr6 for quite a while, never happened to him.
check ecs, they sell genuine intake tubes, but the better thing to do is to replace it with 1 from 42 Draft Designs.
It eliminates the engine sucking in oil through that bloody breather. Just replace it with a filter or a catch can.

Problem with the 42dd tube is the price, I had a zorst shop quote me $80.

Get some heat wrap over those extractors

Its got heat wrap over the extractors already and ive just strapped on some fire retardant hose covers tot he intake pipe. Fingers crossed itll go well! hasnt buggered up yet.

Yeh not keen on the transmission leak. Jmac mentioned a leaking input shaft seal? Still means a gearbox dropout though I assume... Fairly confident its gearbox oil as its purply red in colour. Just spent 80 bucks on MT90 though so not happy its just leaking straight out

Missed the already heat wrapped part. I'd be assuming its just broken from age rather than heat alone.

Yeh seems fine now. Went for a good 2 hour drive last night and no issues. Also now have an aircon issue. Regassed it yesterday and still not very cold. Its the compressor out of the wreck and when it was in the wreck it was freezing. I mean almost too cold.

Was definately gear oil, so from the bell housing being gear oil can only be inout shaftseal or a crack in the casing you def wont know till the transmission is out of the car. No ifs no buts. As for the aircon even if the compressor is good doesnt mean to say there isnt another item faulty, do you know for certain you needed the compressor?? was the system tested properly with the gauges on?? You could have a bad TX valve and that would show up on the gauges for sure
