need emissions and brakes to suit the engine for a start
Think there is a limit on weight vs the power from memory, but with a mk3 and a relatively standard gti engine it should be well under.
Not sure what else you need

Shouldn't be too hard at all considering the amount of mk1 and mk2s with the swap. Definitely falls under the whole power to weigh thing as a standard 1.8t is less powerful than a vr6

So the cat and brakes out of a mk4 gti? Or just the equivalent of?

        Yeah true.
Read somewhere that a replacement engine can't have more than a 15% power increase, so if that's 15% from the VR6 i'm fine. And it'd still be under the power to weight for P plates, so that's fine too, I hope.

Still don't know if all this is worth doing to a 4 door with 86k km's, might just have fun in the GL for now and leave engine swaps for a 2 door down the track.

Vr6 brakes would be sufficient although I don't think it'd be necessary.

BFI were / are making a full plug and play harness for the 2.0 > 1.8t swap. Might be worth looking into if you're curious. Not sure if it's only for the us model cars though.

Ah ok, that'd make things easier.

I've been following that build, fairly pricey, but it'd make it a whole heap easier. Yeah it's all designed around their ABA ob2 ecu, not sure how interchangeable that'll be with the tune and that.
I found another plug and play kit by a british company i think, can't recall their name though.

            • yeah 288 from a VR or Gti should be the go.
your car is mint, maybe find a straightish 2 door with a cooked motor or box?

              • my 2 door will be up for grabs within the coming year, so if you're willing to hold out a while you could have one on your hands...

And also, whoever thought it was a good idea to paint that fkn bonnet yellow is costing me money.

                • That US ABA - 1.8t swap is maddd but will not work with our wiring/ecu.

                  • Can't afford to buy a second car any time soon to do the swap, and the GL would be off the road too long without the ease of a plug and play kit. I'll commit to it next year some time, depending whether I end up doing honours or graduating this year and getting work, would be an awesome project.

                    • that's fair enough mate. I can't afford to sell it yet and upgrade either just yet >.<

Don't get me wrong, I was considering a 1.8T swap from the 8L Audi S3 but eh, despite it being a cool project, it'd just be a hassle for me because of lack of time; just gonna upgrade to something pretty sweet once I'm off these darned green P's!

This has been my issue. Love getting my hands dirty and messing with the car but that's no good when you rely on it as a daily. So to solve this I should be picking up a relatively cheap mk3 this weekend to start building from pretty much ground up. Should be fun.

I think everyone needs a daily and a project.
I've got my mk2 but I'm selling it and getting a mk1 as a project.
