Browndizzle if you don't mind me asking what did you get done for?
well it was really quite a humerous scene when i think about it, i got pinned for wheels, tyres, air filter n cant remember the other lil things. got off alot better than alot of people on here but the fact that they wanted to sting me for engine conversion?! (not believing me n being too damn dumb to realise vw actually had a v6 in their hatches back in the mid 90's...) and tail lights (again not believing me they are standard), thought my car was turbo'd n wanted to sting me for that and also wanted to pin me for the tinted fogs/indi's!!
like, for godsake, this is what we're dealing with people!!!
Not too bad then. Funny that they tried getting you for the engine and tails! Although I can understand the tails as some of those nightshade jobs you see are shocking and dangerous.

Heaps of threads out there answering that exactly question. Basically you want a manual, you want the heater, ac and all windows to work, you don't want to hear a sort of "marbles in a can" sounding rattle coming from the engine, if it has over 150-200kkm it should have had the timing chain done, if not you'll need to have it done yourself and it's not cheap. Make sure clutch isn't slipping and all gears are fine, including reverse.
Make sure it drugs nice, no funny squeaks or knocks etc, and look for any clues that may suggest its been crashed.
