Unless the bearings were so loose that the wheels werent aligned and it was creating excessive amounts of friction? But one would think that would lead to complete bearing failure rather than just an increase in fuel consumption...

Can confirm swapping a 1.8 for VR6 decreases fuel economy. Went from 700kms a tank to 350km. A lead foot doesn't help either. 11/10 do recommend though

Went from a vr6 to a 1.9 tdi. Fuel economy went from 450 ish a tank to 1000kms a tank. Ride quality greatly improved. Noise will be sadly missed but not always. For some reason I still find myself in mk3 section though... Shiiieettt

The friction did reduce quite a bit but what you say does make sense. I'm just going off what the data says.
It does seem odd that it would make such a difference. It was loose in that I could actually move around the wheel when I had it jacked up. Tightened it up and the wheel stayed straight when I would attempt to move it around, as it should be.
Bearing failure sounds nasty.

Noise will be sadly missed but not always.

I miss the sound every time I go to drive another car.


Either way my wallet is happier (read as: more money for mods).

Judging from the photos it looks like it's shaped to leave space under it so that you can still keep stuff there and sit right against the roof of the pocket.
