  • Golf Mk3 Springs

    Hi all.
I'm new to the forum and I was just wondering if anyone had some advice/info on where I could find some well priced lowered springs for a 94 VR6?
    Cheers

I recommend you make a request like this in the "Wanted" section. You can buy new Eibach springs for around 500 rrp, theres bound to be some decent second hand ones around this forum for less than 200, which were probably a year or two old anyway...

Oh and welcome to the forum! We're all quite mad about VW's here so feel free to ask any more questions!

Interesting... whats the go with the stock shocks with lowered springs? Worth even attempting or should both be done at once?

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I hear conflicting stories about this...

From what I gather, you can just keep the old shocks until they die..

Thats what I was told as well, my mechanic said my shocks are good, and that VW ones are quite decent. He said it wouldn't be worth it otherwise...

my shocks are 170,000km old, and very dead. I don't know if the lowered springs had anything to do with it. It was lowered when i got it.

Ive got some lowering springs for sale. I think they are Weitec. They came with a used set of Koni Yellows I bought, but I didn't need them as I already had Eibach springs. I bought them off a forum member who said they were 6months old and had done around 5k km. PM me if interested.

You should change ur shocks as well bcoz at this stage they are most likely 100,000kms+ and they will need to be taken out anyway to swap the springs over. Mine were leaking and offering little resistance when i did mine. I can tell you first hand that eibachs + stock shocks do not go well, bombsquad can also tell u this.

Lol I find that very hard to believe! I was told that my shocks were in excellent working condition, and the car does ride and handle very well. I find it incrediably hard to believe that standard shocks work poorly with Eibach springs, cos they just don't in my case.

How many k's had your friends car done, do you know?

My car has only had 120k on it and even now with sachs shocks + eibachs i dont rate them as good as the koni's in rayrays car. I will eventually replace with either weitec or KW coils once my powerplant is in .

I can get your stock springs reset to any height you like and the shocks replaced with brand new Bilsteins for $1000.
Can get em fitted for another $200

VR6 shocks have a hard life. Most are rooted by 150,000kms.

If lowering a VR6, Id use uprated shocks, or at least new VW ones. Old stock ones will be useless.

Sheesh that isn't much life at all. Mine are at 140 and still going strong. Although I was saying that about my power windows for about 18 months, until a monthe ago one died, and I paid a stupidly large amount to replace the rear right window.

But yeah, it does make sense to do them at the same time I'd have done the same if the shocks were buggered but fortunately they aren't ... for now!

And 1000 bucks is a pretty bloody good price, I was quoted around 1200-1400 for shocks and springs with install, good to see that the VW mechanics are competative!

                            what is better/cheaper to replace?

I'm looking at replacing the suspension in my beast ('97 1.8L CL) but not sure what to get...

Can i get a list of options and suggestions of someone/everyone?

i.e. Coilovers, standard shocks + new springs, new shocks + standard springs.

I really just want to lower it a bit and stop some of the body roll. It is like driving a freakin boat at the moment...

Its a different game the 1.8 / 2L Mk3s and the VR6. The six is much heavier and wears shocks faster and they are more crucial.

With the 4 cylinders you can use cheaper lowered springs and tired shocks much more readily than in a VR6.

If you have big wheels, choose carefully as there is less room for adjustment.
