  • MK3's hate water don't they?

In the morning today, Sydney was raining bucketloads and as a result, i had to trudge through deep pools on my way to work.

As a turned a corner (and again, hitting a pool of water) my car started to spit and shake and eventually conked out.. i know this can be a problem with some cars (as there were 5 other cars that had to pull over and be abandoned), but non of my previous cars ever had this problem (including my little 89 Nissan Pulsar Q)

And i also remembered that last time i tried to clean the engine bay with a jet hose, the car wouldn't kick over until it had time to dry.

Is water a big no no with MK3's? Or just mine?

On a brighter note, my car eventually started AND i also came back to the car to find a CAMDEN GTI business card on my side mirror!

You were a long way from home there Loon!

BMW's hate water more! My mates 525i needs a set of valves and a new head after mondays downpour. It swallowed a mouthfull. When we tryed to revive it on tuesday, i pulled the throttle body off to discover the inlet manifold full of water!

Our servicer of our Golf III goes almost Hysterical if I mention "steam cleaning" or "washing the engine bay".

Mk III's are funny in that they don't seem to like water, and they are like vacuum cleaners for the road. I've never owned a car that gets so much dust & dirt on the motor.

Which is probably why they suck up water, Maris.

How does that happen? Does he have a bucket for an intake?? Why does it need new valves and a new head? When an engine hydro locks, it bents con rods. Not valves...

are you saying that you've never had a problem with idling problem or never had a problem at all with the vr6?

Con Rod is the weakest link in a hydro locked engine. Ive seen at least 10 of them.

Never had a problem with either of the VR6's and the second one that I had had around 185.000k's on it when I sold it.

The Vento gave some problems about 100,000k's ago. It wouldn't idle but a short spray of carburettor cleaner into the throttle body/butterfly (which by the way is not recommended by those supposedly in the know) fixed that.

We have never had any problems associated with rain, heavy rain or deep puddles.

Jesus, I drove the polo through water that came up and over the bonnet (deep puddle, the sign said only 0.5m, it was atleast 0.75m), nothing happened!!

We floated for a bit and the tyres got traction again and off we went.
