does anyone know what exactly is involved with a steering wheel boss kit. I've had a quick search on the net but I'm still not sure wat exactly it does. Is it just an adapter plate basically, or is there more involved.

I just ask as I'm looking to put a Nardi wheel one my 1 since the passat wheel I want is seeming a bit difficult to find!

It's basically an adaptor, not really a plate tho, more of a drum that sits on the splines of your steering shaft at one end and bolts to your steering wheel on the other. If you have an airbag steering wheel be very careful as replacing it with a non airbag wheel will void your insurance and is also a defect.

Have seriously considered going without an airbag so I can run a Momo on mine but not willing to take the risk

Well it is unsafe, considering the car came with one. And airbags were mandatory for the driver during that car's production. I'd just leave it and look to do something else or... just save up and buy a car with a tasty steering wheel i.e GTi / R32...

My air bag is completly open circuit.. Dead. The part i need to fix it is over $500 from VW (a ring with a coil of wire in it!!!!) I like my wheel, cept where the leather is coming off. But i'd like a thicker one. Im concidering an aftermarket wheel at some stage, i mean, i might as well, the air bag don't work.

Search Ebay UK, I've seen a few airbags go on there for around 20-30 pounds or so.

                          incorrect!
If it left the factory with an airbag it needs to stay in i believe!

i found some further info. Its from SA. But the same ADRs apply in Vic. All Mk3 cars and later had airbags in australia didnt they? So it would have been part of their compliance id think
