  • VR6 Side Skirt

    The side skirt has fallen off

    Seems it only had 1.5 screws in place on the bottom and the glue stuff holding it together from the top half has given up.

    I think a washer or two might help those screws actually stay in place + some new sikaflex to hold it all together and It'll be fine. I have known this day was coming for a while, luckily it did while I was in my own driveway...

    Looks like I have a project for the weekend

    Yep, I used Sikaflex to stick the strip on, and screws to hold the bottom bits on for assurance. While you're at it, clean your sills and inspect the whole bit for rust! Common rust areas for side skirt-equipped cars.

      Okay, I'm alright now I have the same problem with one errant strip too hawk, have been meaning to fix it for a while, must do it now, thanks for the inspiration!

        yeah, the other side is a little loose, so I might just rip it off completely and do both sides right. After all I will have bought the Sikaflex... that and last time I bought a tube for one job the tube ended up dry and thrown out

          Yeah best to use as much as possible with that stuff, has a nasty habit of drying up and it aint cheap either.

            adhesives that hold

            Heya,
            i was just reading through your probs with keeping those skirts in place,im not familiar with the adhesive you're talking bout and not sure if what im about to mention is the same product but selling under under a diff name this side of the world, i had alot of difficulty keeping a set of vr6 arches on my mk3, they just kept lifting and lifting, because the car was lowered 50mm and sitting on a set of 17's the return that runs in line to the bodys arch had nothing to screw to because the original body arches had been rolled to accomodate the wheels and drop without too much rubbing, i trimmed the return down and with alot of G-clamps and a nice helping of wind screen adhesive they havent moved or even tried to lift since though that was in Dublin where a good summers day is seldom over 20degrees but if it keeps windscreens in place in this heat it just might keep those skirts where they belong...just an idea.

              That's a good idea. Any general adhesive/sealant product should work fine. Temperature won't be much of a problem, but it would definitely have to be waterproof.

                Well I cleaned up both the skirt and the body parts, got some washers to help re-attach the skirt and even added a couple of missing screws.

                It's all nicely back together and I tell you it's a good feeling. While I was there I got an extension for the air filter and moved that a little bit too so a few little things have been tidied up. Nice.

                    None that fell out and flaked all over my hands. I was all over the drivers side panel scraping off the old glue and didn't notice anything so it looks good. I never got round to the passenger side as that was still attached pretty well.
