Vr6 Stuttering, possible ECU problem? Battery was replaced.

Hey guys, just recently got back from being overseas for 7 months to find my car (1994 Vr6 Golf) to have a dead battery, no surprise. I left in a bit of a rush and didn't have time to research if there was anything in particular to do with the car before letting it sit for 7 months, so it was just put under cover and left as is..most likely a big no no.

Anyway the battery was dead so got a new battery in it and it seems to be going ok, i did notice it was stuttering a bit a mid to low RPM and jerking a bit as i accelerate, but nothing too crazy. I had a quick look online and found all this stuff about resetting the ECU when you disconnect the battery. After having installed the new battery i just went for a normal drive, but when i got home i saw there is a special procedure (VR6 ECU Reset Procedure - THE Corrado Forum Knowledge Base) to follow in order to get the right ECU settings memorised, is it worth me doing this now after having driven it normally for a day?

It may just be me but i think it's also using a fair bit of fuel, not sure since im not used to it anymore after having been away for so long, but i think its possible that it could be related to the ECU settings?

As im sure you can see i am a mega noob ( but slowly learning) with my Golf, so any help at all will be much appreciated!

Find someone to run a scan of the ECU for faults. Could be heaps of things, time consuming and expensive to run down with guess work.

If it was me and I had a car with old fuel in, I'd top it off and run it down as soon as I could, so it has a tank of fresh stuff in.

I'd look at the sparkplugs and check the ign leads out too.

Fuel was drained and refilled with Fresh, will check the plugs and leads tomorrow, thanks for the quick reply.

Change: fuel filter
Oil, oil filter
An get ur coil pack checked an check inside ur air filter box for spiders, bugs etc. best to put a fresh 1 though.

I'd be checking out the throttle body, giving it a good clean (just some carby cleaner if ur careful)
after that id go for vacuum leak.
does it Idle a bit high on a cold start up? and if you have cruise control, is that working/ temperamental ? (that would suggest vacuum issue)

I have the same problem, just bought a vr6 off a guy who hadn't really driven it in 6 months, when I test drove it (before buying it) it ran really well, perfect idle. But son as I put in a new battery it has a really high idle (2000-2200) for about a minute on cold start, and feels like it has an odd misfire when the idle goes down to low revs (around 800-1200). Soon as I'm actually driving it it runs fine though. Cruise control doesn't work so it may be a vacuum leak on my car?
