hey mate good to see a new recruit
I got a quote from brooky parts plus out at Wetheral park for vr6 headlights @ $80 each and vr6 tails for $60. Doesn't really help you though being in SA and all -- lol! give s you an idea for price though.
looks like a nice specimen - keep us all updated with lots of pics! we love pics!!!

Thanks for that! Went and got a few quotes today, Euro Spares wanted $250 for a VR6 headlight and have to get them sent from interstate... pricey huh!
Sourced some VR6 lights thanks to KI11Z, so thats that sorted
Now to find some MK4 front guard indicators (clear ones). Pulled one out from dad's MK4 and it appears to fit up nicely and look pretty good, just needa cut off and resolder the plugs so they work. Been quoted ~$35 each from VW new, or ~$25 each from Euro Spares. See if i can get them a little cheaper than that from someones wreck
Dont worry, will have plenty of pics. Love taking photos so dont need an excuse to take some happy snaps of the Golf!!sigpic

Oh you bet I am! Haha!
One more thing, im looking at getting a spare key made up and the car only came with one and I am always afraid of losing it
I have been quoted about $120 for a new 1 supplied, cut and chipped to suit the car, does this sound about right? VW wanted well over $200sigpic

Yeah im a bit of a wheel nut (pardon the pun!)
Spent a year trying to find a certain style wheel to fit my Skyline in a good offset (which is practically impossible in Australia!)
I found them in the end though

Key: $61.44
Programming: $126.50
Key cut from a local locksmith, ~$10.
So yeah, $197.94 for a spare key AND they needed the car for a couple of hours (read all day) to "program the key". Sure it means they can check and make sure it works, but still... all day...
The locksmith who cut the key for me said he could do a full aftermarket key, coding and cutting for ~$160. By this point I had already bought the key so passed. Maybe next time.
With a late model car you have two options since you have the immobiliser:
1. Pay the money, get a spare key, NEVER loose or break it.
2. Pull the chip out of your current key, glue it to the immobilser reader thingy behind the steering wheel (inside the shroud for neatness sake). Then get some spare keys cut. Sure you loose the immobiliser, but then you can get SWITCHBLADE KEYS!!! mmm shiny.
Technically you could also go after market and get someone to remove/disable the OEM one and put in some remoteless fancy thing.
Let us know if you find somewhere cheap to provide coded keys.

Have been reading this forum for a while, signed up not long ago and reading up on the great ol' Golfs we all love!
After having VeeDubs in the family since i was born (few passats, few golfs, polo etc) and driving around in my folks current MK4, i couldnt resist the temptation of having one myself and was set on a MK3 which i have just recently bought.
Im not new to the current car scene and im sadly now well known around Adelaide due to owning a very distinctive and rare 1986 Nissan HR31 Excel GT Skyline (pillarless hardtop, Japanese import)! Also SA moderator on the r31skylineclub forums and SA section club photographer
Well, heres my new ride which i am very very happy with and love to bits.
1997 MK3 Golf GL, completely stock standard (but not for long!)
Will be my new daily for a few years while im at uni and will get some love and attention slowly over time (I have a very bad modding bug in me!!)
Getting a few bits of paint touched up soon, along with possibly colour coding the spoiler, rear lower lip, skirts and front lip. Clear indicators, replace tail light (one is cracked) and headlight (as one is different to the other ), some new wheels (no cheap crappy aussie brand ones though!) and a nice stereo and a few other little touches here and there.
Look forward to meeting some other fellow Dubbers soon and reading up on more great info on this site
welcome lorenz,,,
the only wheels imo that are made in heaven for the vw golf are here----
Since the early 90s Schmidt Wheels is known as the premium address when it comes to German tuner wheels. The company was set up to create and manufacture the hottest Euro style wheels
check out the vids for RADINOX tech rims......
