  • Timiteo's Grey VR6 Build Thread

Well it has been fun having my MK3 2.0 Golf but I thought it was time I had some VR POWER! Although my wallet kind of said no lol So I found myself a cheap and not so cheerful example of a 1994 VR6. It needs some work but that's the fun isn't it? My plan is to get the engine up and running, as it was sitting for a year at the previous owners home, then sort out the paintwork and interior. THEN the mods begin But of course the obligatory pics first, pretty much untouched at this stage so bear with me

It has a few things that need to be done with the engine like the oil, coolant, leads, plugs and accessory belt as well as a split CV boot on the drivers side. And if I'm not mistaken pretty rusty brakes which I think are partially siezed, but then again I haven't turned it over yet so I can't really test it until I sort out those few things.

Just a question to kick it off, with the CV do I need to just replace just the boot or the joint or even the whole axle?

    Tim.

Is the engine completely buggered or is it just a few things? If the former, I've got the standard 1997 motor out of mine for sale that I wish to shamelessly plug here

I'll get back to you about it in the next week when I get the few parts I need to see if my engine actually runs well enough or it needs a new heart. I did see your listing for it though (the one with 128,200km's I think?) If it is buggered I would be seriously interested in it so don't count me out just yet

Yes it would be. I posted up the link in the eBay section and ended up getting it myself haha.

I gave it a good clean yesterday both inside and out and I think it doesn't look too bad overall. I'll post up some pictures of how it came up later. Although I still need to take the seats out because I think there is something living under them and whatever it is it needs to be eradicated

                      Time for an overdue update

I so far have managed to clean up the interior quite a bit. Gave the seats and carpet a steam clean to remove the human slime and mold:

Plus gave the sun visors a clean too. Before/after shot. Must of had some pretty dirty hands whoever used them:

Then I installed an oil catch can because the PCV valve was well past it as well as the piping having a gaping hole and cracks all through it

Here is the old PCV valve:

And the new oil catch can I rigged up with supercheap parts

I just set it up to vent to the atmosphere for now until anyone tells me otherwise (blue slip perhaps?)

As well as these few things I visited Matt down at Camden GTI to grab an oil filter, G12+ coolant, a serpentine belt and a driver's side tail light (he didn't have a left one in stock haha )

Then I changed the oil and filter, fuel filter and spark plugs/leads. Let me tell you that the oil filter was dirtiest thing I've ever seen and the oil itself was black as night, I was so disgusted I forgot to get a photo haha Anyway here's a photo of the new leads installed:

I also reinstalled the pencil tray which was sitting in the boot:

And finally I bought a 17mm allen key and some gearbox oil in preparation for a change. I've already done the 2L white golf just not the VR6 yet:

Here's a photo of the two together just for kicks:

Well that's about it so far, except for the fact that I have to sort out the rough idle and hard starting on the car. It seems to rev alright but sits at 500rpm and stalls sometimes. Also seems to tick under revving. I scanned it with my VAG-COM cable and it came up with error 00513, 00515 and 00533.

I know that 00515 code is the camshaft position (hall) sensor G40, it says that there is an open or short to the B+ cable. I'm not quite sure what that means though, any suggestions?

The 00533 code is an idle speed regulation error but from what I can see there are no vacuum leaks in the system, perhaps something else I would say, possibly injectors?

The 00513 code is the engine speed sensor G28 but from what I've read that isn't an issue because the engine actually starts, it just takes a long time in doing so

I've booked the car in to see the mechanic to get him to have a look at the engine stuff (because of the novice I am) and also see if it's worth saving if there's more serious issues with it.

                      Cheers guys. Tim.

                            Thanks for your support guys

I took the car into the mechanics on Friday morning and was told that it had either a blown head gasket or a cracked head I'm not angry just annoyed that the fellow who sold me the VR6 didn't tell me about the problem. He'll soon get a call though

Not to waste any time I took the liberty of calling up Devin and going out to pick up his old 2.8 engine. It was nice to start meeting people here from the forum in the flesh and I got to see his 3 litre wake up the neighbours haha. He still needs to tune it but oh my

So by Friday night I had the new engine sitting in my garage ready to be put in soon (not by me of course, I'm too novice lol). So I'm selling my white 2 litre Golf now to try and get the money to get someone to chuck the new engine in for me. Should be able to do it in the next couple of weeks (sale willing).

I'll post up some pictures of the engine once I have some free time tomorrow.

                            Cheers, Tim.

I know this may sound odd, but hear me out when I say this.

                              This is brilliant.

You've been screwed over by someone in a serious way, and the beautiful thing is you're just keeping it going!

Kudos to you sir for not throwing in the towel!
