Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Okay cool.

Does anybody know much about the H&R cup kits??

Also, everyone on the 'tex seems to love the Koni yellow / Eibach Red combo, anybody got one of these, what do you think of it?

Thats certainly an interesting offer, but I'm still researching whats best for the car.

I'm not really interested in swapping suspensions in and out, over and over, so this is a do it once, do it right kind of job. I'll let you know if I want to go ahead with it

Coming into this thread a little late, as it seems you've already made you mind up, but:

It sounds like your car isn't very low, how much thread do you have left on the coilover? (is that what the 140, and 170mm were?)

If so, (I know it sounds counter intuitive) but wind it down a good 50mm or so, and see if the ride quality improves.

this is based on my personal experience with my FK's (not adjustable), I had them in my mk 2 and mk 3 at various stages. I had them slammed in my mk 2, on 17" wheels with 163/35's! and they rode great. I've currently got them back in the mk 2 (spent sometime in the mk 3 before I got the H&R UUL) and they're wound up (over 100mm thread) with standrd VR6 wheels/tyres and the ride is absolutely sh*thouse. SO bumpy and makes me not want to drive it. (note: I raised they car in an attempt to make it more legal, hopefully will be getting engineered soon). Similar story when I had them in the mk 3. Initially had them reasonably high (so control arms were about level) and it was pretty firm (but better than now) I changed wheels and went a bit lower and the ride quality improved.

So please, before you go and spend some more cash, wind the coils down, and see how it goes. Worse comes to worse, it doesn't work, and you have to wind them back up. Not out of pocket. You might even find you can bump up the rebound a touch, to reduce too much "springy-ness"

You "Could" go to softer springs.. But that won't do much for your bump settings, as they are matched to the springs that come with V2s.

Not really a lot you can do.. We have terrible roads here, but they don't really worry me (running V1s in the Caddy and Weitec Hicon GTs in my GLD).. So Perth roads must be REALLY bad.

How many KM have you done on them? They might be still bedding in.

KW do make a "Street comfort" kit..

                    Nope.
Isn't the stiffness of the v1 = middle setting v2? Correct me if I'm wrong

                    Cheers

                      V1 is height adjustable only
                      V2 is height and rebound
V3 is height and rebound and compression(bump)

Clubsport are = V3 with stiffer springs and camber adjustable tops....

Im with Jarred, even my Ta Technics rider better lower. When I had to wind them up defect it got really crashy and stiff, as weird as it sounds

Interesting idea! I measured the car's ride height as 140mm and 170mm from the hardpoints were you'd jack up the car from.

It's a long weekend this weekend in WA, so I might play mechanic tomorrow and experiment with the ride height to see what happens. I'll let you guys know

Let us know the ride height in reference to the coilover threads too

And given those measurements, I'd say that the car is actually quite high (for coilovers), so I definately think that my theory should be valid.

                            Keep us updated

Welp, I wound em up 20mm all round and the story is no better. The change in the centre of gravity is also quite noticeable as well, for the worst, heh. I feel like I'm driving a 4x4 not a VR6! At least now the control arms are level.

But yeah, I can see why winding them down would work. Basically, the coils are at the top 10% of the threads just about, so the springs are quite compressed = lesser ability to absorb bumps. The car is basically jiggling over anything atm. I'm over it.

Ran out of time to really wind them down. I expect though that your theory would be right Jared.

well, you know what you've got to do next weekend then
(and it takes much less effort to wind coils down too )
