Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • KW V2 LE's too firm

My coilovers are too darn firm

What can i do about it? They're wound all the way to max softness already but I can still feel every darn bump in the road. I'm a bit over it really. I'd like something much more comfortable for everyday cruising

Was thinking of swapping them out for some sport shock/spring combo?

If it is any comfort to know that they will get softer with a bit more use.

They've been on the car for about 3 years :S

My mechanic looked over the bushes last week, says there in good nick. Most of them have been replaced in the last year or two.

I have no idea what my spring rates are, I havent modified the KWs at all in the time they've been on the car.

whats your ride height like? If its low then raise it up a tad and you should find it a bit more comfortable

What about your tyres? Do you have big wheels with like 185 35 tyres? If so that wont help at all.

if you have rebound and compression adjustability, try setting the compression damping (to about a quarter hard from full soft) and the rebound damping ( three quarter hard from full soft)
                  Hope this helps, good luck

I've got 16" rims with 205/45/R16 tires. The car isn't that low either. Just measured the ride height and it sits about 140mm off the ground at the front, and 170mm off the ground at the rear.

Unfortunately, the V2's dont have compression adjustments - only rebound - but thanks anyway fred27

I'm kind of over feeling every little bump in the road. Perth roads aren't that flash and it is a world easier driving other cars with much softer suspension. I'd never go back to stock on mien dub because it just looks so darn bad but I have to do something about this, I dread driving greeny for anything longer then a 20min sojourn these days!

Thats not even like slightly low... Maybe lowering it a tad might make them ride better?

This is why i recommend V1s for street.

You "Could" go to softer springs.. But that won't do much for your bump settings, as they are matched to the springs that come with V2s.

Not really a lot you can do.. We have terrible roads here, but they don't really worry me (running V1s in the Caddy and Weitec Hicon GTs in my GLD).. So Perth roads must be REALLY bad.

How many KM have you done on them? They might be still bedding in.

KW do make a "Street comfort" kit..

I dont really know what Sydney/NSW roads are like, but I've heard stories... Perth roads seem pretty horrible in spots. Oddly, they're quite good when you get further out into the burbs and the hills.

I originally bought the V2s with the intent to do weekend track stuff but it never ended up happening. They have been awesome for spirited fangs up in the hills and beyond, but on city roads it's just become too much. I'm over it.

I honestly dont know how many KM I've done on them. They were installed in November 2007 but I dont drive that often. Going off my service records, I do about 13,000km a year. So that's maybe 50,000km on them?

Would increasing the ride height a bit soften them up at all?

I am preparing for the fact that it might have to be a case of removing them and installing a H&R cup kit or something similar...

Right. The time has come for the KWs to go. Does anybody have any recommendations for sporty spring/shock combos?

Eibach or Koni do a nice 60/40 kit. Make sure you get the 6 cyclinder set up so it doesnt sit nose heavy.
