  • MkIII fuel guage

So I'm assuming it's not just my vr6 that has a fuel gauge that will go up when i go down a hill or round a right hand bend and do the opposite uphills and around left hand corners.
Yesterday I managed to run out of fuel whilst the guage read 1/4 full but the other day i drove 50kms with the needle well in the red. Very frustrating as I was in the middle of nowhere 20kms from the nearest town. Why can't a manufacturer than can fit a computer that tells me my average fuel consumption and speed not manage to fit a fuel warning light or a slightly more accurate fuel guage!

    end rant...

im lucky that my fuel gauge will always display less than what i actually put in but then it will go back to normal 90% of the time. perhaps a new sender is required? its easy to access it as its in the boot where the black cap is. i dont know the exact procedure but i can find out from one of my manuals when i get back home

That sounds like a bugger! I've still not found the very limit of my petrol tank although I've had myself very concerened but it still hasn't let me down to this day. Inevetbly - I'll push it too far one day, I just pray I dont have to walk 20k's.

what annoys me about mine is that it doesn't tell me when I am hitting reserve. are our cars suppose to tell us when we hit reserve?

I don't yet know exactly how far my guage will go down and it's not something I really want to find out. I'm just in the red now, but will fill it up tomorrow on the way home. (all of about 6 k's each way )

I can't say that I have noticed it jumping around too much either.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Yeah I ended up having to sign up with NRMA for $300! after a half an hour walk around to find a town and then ended up using the emergency phone!
Mine definitely fluctuates so might have to look in to the sender as peedman suggests.
            cheers

yeah that's what i'm gonna do from now on, except at 380 kms I think! I can usually get 400kms out of mine without too much worry.

mine fluctuates alot too, I have come to accept it's one of those common flaws.

One time I have actually gone pass the red completely by about 1/2 mm on gauge. I remember at the pump I had about 5 and a bit more litres in my tank.

Really? Where does all the fuel go. I ran out the other day and after the tow, paid $49 for a full tank at about $1.20 a litre so that's prob only about 40 llitres, what's the go? never heard of this before....
                          cheers

once it clicks, remove the nozzle count to 10 and put nozzle back in and keep pumping.
