Use the stock one, made by Hengst. BIG problems with aftermarket ones.

Thats the plan, but since I don't need an air filter and I already have the fuel filter I may just (sadly) buy the OEM one from McGrath Liverpool, unless of course I can find somewhere else to get it locally(ish).

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Just picked up the 10-40w Fuchs GTO MW for $40 for 5L from Supercheap today, on special as part of the whoel Bathurst thing. Will see how it goes when I actually get it into the car.

Sadly it was the last bottle otherwise I would have got a second one, after all the VR6 seems to drink a little oil so a little spare is always a good thing

Not sure exactly what it means, but I know that you should run lower numbers in cooler climates and higher numbers in warmer climates. The first number (0, 5, 10, 15, 20) is the viscosity number. Lower numbers (30 or 40) for higher revving, turbo engines (maybe those with higher compression??) higher numbers for normal engines (50 or 60). For a psuedo-performance non-turbo engine like the VR6 I reckon 10 or 15 and W40 or W50 is about right for most climates in Oz. Coming into summer, I would look at using a 15-W50 rather than a 10-W40

This would give reason to why there was 10-60w in my car when I bought it.

MattyT: how often do you need to top off your oil? As a thinner oil it should burn quicker meaning it needs to be replaced more.

I would usually use a higher weight oil for that reason. Will see how the 40w goes in the VR6 otherwise I might try something a little hevier next time.

Interesting question! With the 10-W60 (Agip) it ate oil like no tomorrow. Had to add about 3 litres over 3 months before getting it serviced and putting in 10-W30. Since then, only topped up once in 6 months.

Now this is probably placebo, but it doesn't feel like the engine revs as freely now with the 10-w30 in it

I very nearly bought Motul 4100 Power today while at repco, only thing that stopped me was the price, $94!!

The same reason I was hesitant, although I didn't think it was quite that much.

I went to a bunch of places looking for the Fuchs oil only to find no one carried it. I was ready to just go and get something else, and being that I was watching Bathurst and they kept mentioning the SuperCheap 1000 sale (funnily enough), I went down to have a look see and stumbled on the Fuchs:

At $40 it was a pretty good price considering the prices of other synthetic oils, that and it's supposed to be a "performance" oil. Oh and it's "German Technology"! I wasn't swayed at all by all the little Fuchs stickers in the V8's I swear!

It will all come down to how often I have to top up if the oil is burning away. I remember in my old Type III Fastback everytime it was serviced by Vintage VW the oil would burn away in nothing flat, I'd then tip in some (virtually replace the whole lot) Castrol GTX2 and would be all good from there out. The right oil really does make a difference.
