  • Crunching Second

    Hey fellow mk3ers

On a cruise today was driving and everything was sweet, sun was shining fantastic....Come to a set of lights, took off from the lights and got to red line in first and then as I went to second it crunched HUH WTF @(#U@#(

I didn't think much of it as I wasn't sure. Did it again a few times , after that. This is going from first to second it crunches, I also took the second gear to just over 6000rpms and switched to 3rd and that was fine, as the other gears also!

What I couldn't get was I could take it to 5000rpms and it would not crunch from first to second but if I took it higher it was crunching not sure what it could be, can anyone help me!

What can be wrong I ask or your knowledge fellow vdubbers!!!

    SYNCROS!!!

sayy bye bye second gear syncro ring. The most common of all gearbox issues.

Sadly, if it's the syncro's, it looks like it's time for a rebuild. I was looking at buying a VR6 with this problem and was quoted around the $2k mark to fully rebuilt the gearbox including labour and a new clutch.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Pretty normal having a 1-2 crunch on the Vr.

Has the trans oil ever been changed? This can help out. Use Castrol syntrax or similar. Is expensive but can help.

I don't think that its the engine mount, but then again I am not sure!

The box is still good with the rest of the gears don't think that I will need a rebuild

yeah if it does it when you are driving hard. The engine/gearbox rocks and that makes 2nd gear crunch. I used to have this problem until i upgraded the engine mounts. Magically it disappeared

That's odd - I wouldn't think engine mounts would fix something internal to a gearbox!

it affects the relationship between the shifter, cables and gearbox. I think its caused by 2nd gear not engaging properly moreso than there actually being anything internal wrong. Well that was the case with my car. It is a very common problem as well of you have a read on vwvortex. If youre still running on original engine/gearbox mounts chances are theyre knackered anyways even if its not the cause of this particular problem.

so does that mean just replace the mounts with new OEMs? or is there actually 'upgrades' that you can get for them? the rear/left engine mount was kinda leaking oil until I got it replaced teh other day...

i had a problem once where the car wouldn't go into gear at all... the problem was clearly visible when I opened the hood - one of the plastic linkages on one of the ball joints had popped open. simply put the car into neutral and clicked it back on.

yeah u can get uprated ones. Some of them tend to trasfer more vibration to the car thought. Its a tradeoff between that and less engine movement.

But thats a whole other topic. We dont know if this is the cause of this particular problem. Just a possible cause.

Great to know its a common problem, I too have had cluches going into second gear in high revs, it shatters my heart hearing that noise. How much would an cost get the mount replaced, anyone????

MK3VR6, if the price is right want to do a group buy and get it replaced together, in the coming weeks, I guess it is worth a try?

definately 2 gear syncro mate very common on 02a gearbox mate. The 020 in the mk2 gti was exactly the same 2nd gear always gets the most abuse!
