  • Woe is me, oh expensive MK3 :(

Well just took the VR6 in to get checked up at Canberra VW Centre and the following list of things need to be fixed:

    Electric water pump
    front discs
    front pads
    small oil leak
left and right control arm bushes
    wheel alignment

This little operation will be costing somewhere in the region of $1100

Not nice only 4 days after i bought the car

Oh well the purchase price was decent so I guess I havent done too bad as long as noting else major goes wrong in the next year or so......i hope

My VR6 is only a few weeks old...

    2nd key cut - $200
    Misc electrics - $250
    Heater Core - $700
    Window Tinting - $230
    Radiator Temp sensor - $80
    Light Globes - $100

I though the air con was dead, but turned out the misc electric fixes, well fixed that.

Still have to have the steering looking at, looking somwhere near $500 if the problem is what we think it is, but then it might just be the balance. *crosses fingers*

I was looking at somewhere like $2500 in the first little while to fix bits and pieces. Some, like the air con, have turned out much cheaper, allowing me to get the window tint done right and do a few other cosmetic things.

Waiting for the power windows to die too

Still I don't think I would trade the VR6 for anything else. Enjoy your new toy... like I need to say that, I know you will

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Just got a VR6 a few week ago. So far it's cost me:
      6L Oil
      Oil Filter
      Rear Brake Pads
As well i'm yet to track down the oil leak, the driver's side window doesn't sound to good and the Cruise control needs looking at.
It's going to Launceston to have the airbag looked at (at caryards cost ) and it's cost me an addiction that i'm sure will run into the thousands, wouldn't have any other car

Don't get me wrong I love the car It just could have waited a few months first thats all lol

I have a suspicion my rear passenger side window has the disease but that can wait til the other stuff is done. I got the car at a good price so if the repairs stay under 2k for the first 6 months Its all good.

that's not too bad for the heater core. I was quoted somewhere in the 900-1000.

what's wrong with your steering? when you need to change the heater core, two sheer bolts have to be drilled out, which could have affected the steering if not done properly.

sounds alright, as in the servicing price. not too bad, so long as it gets done properly.

I had my electric water pump go recently too. the part cost something like $350 here.

yeah that is the problem buying a second hand car isn't it. you don't really know what you are in for.

it's a little harder to turn to the right than the left, could be a bushing, could be a bent arm... could be lots of things. But since it repeats at approximately the same wheel position as you go to full lock it seems to be in the shaft.

It pulls a little to the left, but not a great deal, you probably wouldn't notice if not for the other problem. Eitherway, thats first on my list of things to look at when I sell my Mk1 and get a little more cash.

Heater core was a nice suprise, but thats what Wolfsburg in St Peters charged me to do the job, actually it was $703 and that included a new air filter in the AC system as well. They also replaced (by which I mean put in) a bunch of screws throughout the dash that were missing

As for thebolts being the issue, it was the same with the steering both before and after the heater core, so thats not it.

Funny story with the heater core, it's working so well now I can't turn it all the way to hot or I think I may just toast myself

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I think it's normal for most cars unless you are lucky enough to find a car for sale from someone who just spent lots of money on it, otherwise, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and know how to fix little annoying things (not heater cores), then it's quite cheap to get any car.

That's nothing - 4 days after I bought mine this is what the mechanic had to repair: Front discs & pads (& flush), rear shocks (went for Bilsteins' though , springs and bump stops, radiator & fan, air con recondition, and a window regulator. Total cost - $4300!!! Then I needed new rims so I went for a tyre/wheel package and of course had to go 17 x 7 ($1400). Now all I need to do is fix a mystery oil leak and the window regulator on passenger side. And loving it...
