  • problems getting into 1st gear vr6

Hi guys i have a mk3 vr6 I have problem getting into 1st sometime. Most time i have to put it into 2nd then first.

I had this problem with my seat a while back, i end up replacing a little busher that held the linkage in but don't know where to start on the vr6?

      yeh? what he said...

      are you double shuffling?

I guess i've done that a few times when slowing down at the lights or something. you shouldn't be relying on the brakes 100% to get you to a stop though... engine braking ftw.

I have a problem going into first from any gear...which could be the same sort of problem as yours frank...

if some little bushing will fix the problem then i'll replace it asap...

for me to get the car into first from any gear i need to stick it into 2nd first then it will go in..

The rubber busher fixed the problem on my SEAT Ibiza GTI but i don't what could cause the problem on a mk3 golf...

I sometimes have the same issue with the same solution. Would be interested to see the solution.

Incidentally I have (what I consider) a bit of left/right movement in the shifter while in gears, so maybe there is a bushing or two somewhere that is old and needs replacing which could be the cause of and solution to this problem.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

yeah I too normally need to pop it into 2nd before I go into first. this is when I am slowing down or about to take off. doesn't really bother me much, kinda get use to it.

I do not engine brake into first, usually 2nd is sufficient.

Engine braking is generally quite harsh on your drivetrain. The money you save from prolonging your brake pads is negligible when you think about how much stress you put onto your engine and drivetrain.

As for your problem, I sometimes get that too in my 2.0L. It's not often that it does it though. The thing is, is it merely a bushing problem or something more greater? I heard about it being the syncro's, but I'm not really sure. I don't even really know what they are actually - anyone explain?

I thought I was the odd one to have this problem. Same thing. second and than first.. so usually I have my foot on clutch in traffic and gear ready in first to go.

But a distintive "L" movement with constant force works too. but still slower than 2nd and than 1st.

hey ray. I have always assumed syncro = "double clutching" ?? used when dropping a gear with cluching in and reving a bit the catch the same speed with higher revs. But my definition doesn't make sense.

That's just rev-matching while downshifting. A must to ease the stress on the drivetrain, and while I'm on it, you should be rev-matching whenever you change gears! I believe synchro is short for synchromesh, and that is what I'm having trouble with grasping.

rev-matching.. The japs call it "double clutch" those drifting video I got it from.. perhaps this can go on "glossary of unfamiliar terminology" thread.
I know what you mean, absolutly esstential. especially from 5th to 3rd while over taking.

Anyways back to the topic.. I really wonder what is "jamming" the 1st at time. I always have a fear the gear box will fall apart.

my vr had the same issue,I always thought it was just part of that really good vr6 GB !! but admittedly after the GB was changed under warranty before it finished the new one was much better.

my mk4 gti does the same thing sometimes, but jiggle into 2nd then it slips straight into 1st ok.

Has anybody heard of a "speed limit" for changing back into 1st? I read somewhere on the Vortex that the figure was 11kmph or 13kmph (some random bullsh*t like that) and that you could only change back into 1st while doing those speeds or under (which sorta makes sense - it's impossible trying to downshift to 1st until you're absolutely crawling).
